Genelec 8030C Overview

Styled in a dark gray, classic Producer finish, Genelec 8030C is a single 2-way active studio monitor designed to provide accurate mix referencing for audio engineers, musicians, and producers in project studios, small control rooms, or mobile setups. It features 100W of Class-D amplification driving a 5 1/8” woofer and 3/4” metal-dome tweeter, producing a frequency response of 47 Hz to 25 kHz.

A proprietary waveguide enhances imaging while the bass reflex port extends the low-frequency response. The aluminum enclosure is shaped to minimize diffraction. It supports a balanced input via an XLR 3-pin connector. Room compensation options include high- and low-frequency adjustments. There is a selectable power-saving mode that enables automatic power up/down via a signal-sensing circuit.

The 8030C offers multiple mounting options including threaded holes for compatibility with mic stands, OmniMount brackets.

The 8030 C comes with an Iso-Pod isolation stand.

Genelec 8030C Reviews

Wonderful sounding speakers

I bought these for my small home office. The headline is that these speakers sound close to perfect. Genelec is one of the few companies that provides accurate measurements of their speakers. These measurements have been validated from third parties. The 8030c model measures almost perfectly flat from about 50 Hz to 20 kHz. Horizontal dispersion is also near perfect with smooth downward sloping response. This means that reflected sound will not introduce tonal imbalance if you're listening non near field. It also means that you can equalize these speakers to whatever response you prefer. There are a few minor downsides. First, low bass has significant distortion at high volumes. This is just physics: volume will always be limited by enclosure size and driver diameter. If you use a subwoofer like I do (crossed with 24db slope at 80Hz) and use them in a relatively small room this issue goes away. Second, vertical dispersion is not as good as horizontal. You need for the tweeter to point to ear level at the listening location. Luckily the bottom mount makes this easy. If you want better vertical dispersion you should consider the more expensive coaxial models like the 8331. For my case this doesn't matter. If you want to research these further just google them. A popular science-based audio review site has these speakers #1 among around 100 tested, if you use them with a subwoofer. They compute a suite of measurements and run these through a preference model developed at Harmon that takes this data and predicts listener preference in a blind speaker test. The model explains 86% of listener preference variance. Anyway, these are some of the best speakers around and I highly recommend them.

Top notch studio monitor

I highly recommend the Genelec two-way 5 studio monitor. I auditioned the Genelec 8030C Studio Monitors at B&Hs NYC SuperStore before making a purchase.  It goes without saying, but bears repeating: it is always best to audition speakers before you buy them! Note that I had another pair of studio monitors in mind from reviews I read online before I started comparing them in the store. The sales person at B&H was knowledgeable and let me hear A/B comparisons between the studio monitors they had hooked up.   When he activated the Genelec 8030Cs with 5 woofers, I forgot about the other monitors that I was interested in from those online reviews, and decided right then and there, the Genelecs were for me. Interestingly, I also auditioned the smaller and larger versions of the Genelecs in the 8000 series, but the 5 woofer version captures a sweet spot.  The sound is tight and accurate, and musical.  There is sufficient airiness and enough heft in the bass.  With its bi-amp design and crossover filter, I dont hear any audible crossover between tweeter and woofer, so it is seamless.  There is plenty of mid-range, but no intentional frequency bump. Setup was a breeze.  I like the optional EQ DIP switches to adjust for different listening rooms. If you are in the market for a great studio monitor, you should give the Genelec a listen for yourself. Note: if you plan to mount these monitors on stands, know that the iso-pod is permanently attached to the bottom of the monitor.  That is because the bottom of the monitor is rounded instead of flat.  The iso-pod attaches to an optional mounting plate, Genelec model 8030-408.  That plate was built originally for an earlier version of this same monitor 8030A, but I can confirm that the 8030-408 plate fits the later 8030C model as well.  In turn, the plate mounts to stands that have a 3/8 thread, so be careful: most microphone stands have a 5/8 thread instead. For the stands, I stayed with Genelec for full compatibility.  I bought the Genelec 8000-409 Floor Stand, which has an extra wide base (17.5 in diameter) for stability.  Trust me, you will not be able to knock these stands over accidentally!

Great sound, simple setup

The sound you are getting for your money with these is spectacular. If there's any downside it's that they can sound phenomenal with the right listening position and maybe not quite as phenomenal if you site somewhere else. The vertical alignment is particularly noticeable. Luckily the rubber foot makes it easy to adjust the vertical angle, not something you are going to get from most monitors or bookshelf speakers that are in prismatic cases. The only other slight con may be some hiss if you stick your ear right in the tweeter, but if you sit a meter away you can't hear it. I turned the sensitivity all the way down and that also reduced the hiss. With pro-level sources (my reference level is +13dBu) you don't need the gain these speakers offer.

Like any other genelec

Volume ntrol? Seems there is no knob on speaker..... how can you control volume? If I need external control, who makes the best?
Asked by: James
The 8030C is designed without a volume control so that the audio signal volume is controlled from the source. There is an input sensitivity adjustment control on the rear of the monitor which can be used to match the output from the source.

Which Genelec model is suitable for studios of size 50X23X13(Ft)?
Asked by: Haein
That would really depend on your listening area. 8030's with a sub work work for one to two people in the listening area. 8050's would offer an 8'' woofer with better separation in the sonic field B&H # GE8050BPM. 1032c's would be great as well with a 10'' woofer and offer SAM technology BH #GE1032CPM.

What is the best way to attach this to my MBP? I'm doing video editing and I don't have any Mixers / USB audio interface stuff. I just have the 1/8 inch headphone jack....
Asked by: michael
You can use a cable to connect from the headphone jack in your Mac Book Pro to the back of this monitor. However your audio will sound nicer if you intergrade a audio interface to the setup. The cable you will need to connect two of the Genelecs to the computer is in the link bellow. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1102499-REG/hosa_technology_hmx_010y_1_8_stereo_mini_to.html

Does the white model have the power switch in the front of the speaker? That's what it looks like in the pictures, but the other colors don't. Is it an old photo or the correct image for this product?
Asked by: Suzi
The 8030s all have the power switch on the rear panel, regardless of color. Any front switch photo is from an old design
