Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tri... Overview

Sporting a 19.8 lb load capacity at a weight of only 3.4 lb, this black Befree Advanced Travel Tripod from Manfrotto is a robust support option that can serve as a convenient travel companion for professional photographers and passionate hobbyists alike. It is made of aluminum alloy and reaches a maximum height of 59.1" with its column extended, folding down to 15.7" in length for simplified transport in its included carrying case.

Each leg of the Befree Advanced is composed of four sections, which can be adjusted and secured in seconds thanks to the M-lock twist locks that operate with a simple 90° turn. A side-pull selector allows you to set up the tripod at three different angle configurations, enabling low angle shooting with the simple push of a button. Complementing the legs is an equally sturdy center ball head, which offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use. The final element is a quick release plate, which offers dual compatibility for RC2 and Arca-type compatible systems, except for the Manfrotto 804-3W and MH804-3W tripod heads.

An Easy Link attachment is available at the top portion of the leg section, and allows you to connect compatible accessories such as flashes or reflectors. This enables you to use the tripod as a support system and reduce the amount of gear you need to carry while travelling. Rubberized feet are used to avoid skidding and help keep the Befree Advanced stable in most types of terrain. Finally, an integrated hook found at the bottom can be used to add a weight and increase the stability of your tripod when shooting in more difficult conditions.

Plastic Junk

The important components of the tripod are made of cheap plastic. The tripod head is comprised of plastic, including all the knobs. I would recommend a different tripod. This is not worth the money.

Brilliant travel tripod

I was sceptical of buying a travel tripod but having used big Manfrotto tripods for 40 years I trust the name. I was not disappointed. I'm currently travelling through Italy and this tripod has been amazing, it folds up super small for my medium sized backpack. The bullhead is brilliant, very easier to operate/adjust. If you leave the centre column down and don't use the thinnest legs it is rock solid. I'm using a Pentax K-70 on the tripod.

Needs improvements at this pri

For a travel tripod it's okay. My two biggest issues with this is. The camera plate is NOT compatible with other manfrotto tripod heads. If I want to switch to another tripod, I need to change out the plate. The plate comes loose very easily. On other plates, there is a layer of cork to hold the plate from rotating or coming loose while in use. I give the tripod itself 4 stars, but for the head I give it 2 stars

Tripod is light and easy to pack, but the plate on that comes with it isn't the standard Manfrotto plate so you won't be able to switch between all tripods.

It's super stable, and because of that it's a bit heavy too. Works great for me cause I'm always lugging it in a bike bag. I wouldn't want to hike with it or walk a ton with it though.

Lighter Tripod for Travel

I normally use a Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 tripod while photographing waterfalls and landscapes. I'm going to be traveling this Fall and need a smaller, lighter tripod for the trip. The Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with 494 Ball Head was a natural complement. Especially since the ball head uses the 200PL QR plates that are affixed to my camera body and supertelephoto lens. The MT055XPRO3 has always felt heavy when attached to my camera backpack. This is okay for short hikes. But, it does get uncomfortable on longer ones. When I strapped the Manfrotto Befree onto the backpack for a recent outing, I couldn't even feel it. I now have a travel and long trail hike tripod that I can enjoy. The Manfrotto Befree is a compromise. One that I'm happy to live with. It isn't as sturdy as the MT055XPRO3. I didn't expect it to be. But, it did seem to handle the job of holding my camera steady while shooting long exposures of waterfalls. The one short coming is that the ball head is small for fastening the QR Plate. It didn't seem as secure as the Manfrotto X-PRO 3-Way Head that I use on the larger tripod. It did seem to do the job. I'll just have to be a little extra careful. I'm glad to have a lighter alternative for when I need it.
