Manfrotto Befree overview

  • 1Description

Sporting a 17.6 lb load capacity at a weight of only 3.6 lb, this black Befree Advanced Travel Tripod from Manfrotto is a robust support option that can serve as a convenient travel companion for professional photographers and passionate hobbyists alike. It is made of aluminum alloy and reaches a maximum height of 59.1" with its column extended, folding down to 15.7" in length for simplified transport in its included carrying case.

Each leg of the Befree Advanced is composed of four sections, which can be adjusted and securely locked into place with the QPL lever locks found on all segments. A side-pull selector allows you to set up the tripod at three different angle configurations, enabling low angle shooting with the simple push of a button. Complementing the legs is an equally sturdy center ball head, which offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use. The final element is a quick release plate, which offers dual compatibility for RC2 and Arca-type compatible systems, except for the Manfrotto 804-3W and MH804-3W tripod heads.

An Easy Link attachment is available at the top portion of the leg section, and allows you to connect compatible accessories such as flashes or reflectors. This enables you to use the tripod as a support system and reduce the amount of gear you need to carry while travelling. Rubberized feet are used to avoid skidding and help keep the Befree Advanced stable in most types of terrain. Finally, an integrated hook found at the bottom can be used to add a weight and increase the stability of your tripod when shooting in more difficult conditions.

  • Weighs 3.6 lb, can hold up to 17.6 lb of gear

    Manfrotto Befree reviews

Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with 494 Ball Head (Lever Locks, Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb even with pro camera and pro lens I had been searching for ages for a lightweight small packing tripod which would support my Canon 5D MK111 and 24-70 L 2.8mm. Originally I was looking at the BeFree but the specs said it only supported 4KG’s. Then in December 2017 I found the Manfrotto has released an ‘advanced’ version that takes 8kilos. Despite reading the usual reviews and worries about suitability for pro gear I ordered one. I have to say I delighted. I am have put shooting all weekend and also in some extremely high winds. The BeFree advanced has been superb and supporting my pro gear. The ball head locks tight and the tripod is sturdy. There is some movement when the tripod is at full length when in high winds but what do you expect! The tripod is very light and packs nicely into my day pack. Very easy and quick to erect and and pack away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for travel I did purchase this through a local vendor due to time constraints but still wanted to leave a review. I found that it is only a half pound heavier than its carbon fiber counterpart. I didn't use the ball head much but it did come in extremely handy on a vertical shot with my D850 and 16-35. Since it has a 3/8" thread on the center column, I used my Manfrotto 128 RC Quick Realease micro fluid head for smooth buttery video. Worked like a charm. I don't like the plastic pieces for the quick release mechanism as my other manfrotto gear is all metal. I love how it folds backwards to cover up the center column top which also protects it from getting dinged up on the threads. Overall satisfied as it proved to be perfect for backpacking. I strapped it to my Lowepro backpack which had a convenient tripod holder at its base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best travel tripod by far Brought this with me during our trip to Scotland, it's amazing how stable and sturdy this tripod can do for its convenient, compact, lightweight size. Although it still cant compete with Manfrotto 055XPRO series in terms of stability (obviously since 055 has thicker, heavier legs), it does the job. Tried 30 sec exposure on different weather conditions, and the results i got were great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slight learning curve but love it There are some fine points about adjusting positions that took some deductive mastering, but this tripod is sturdy and yet extremely portable. As a rule I hate working with a tripod, but my yearning for excruciatingly sharp images often makes one a necessity. This is a great tripod for a tripod-hater like me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice little tripod Overall I liked this tripod. I had the opportunity to use this tripod over the weekend for a few sunset pictures. I carried it around for several hours and it did not feel like it was weighing me down. It is only a little heavier than the carbon fiber version, so it is a good compromise in terms cost vs overall weight. The legs were a little stiff, which makes it difficult to fold and unfold the tripod. Hopefully it will loosen up some with use (don't want the legs to be too loose). The only thing I really do not like from a design perspective is that the head needs to be positioned very just right in order to fold the legs all the way up. You have to tilt the ball head away from the two nobs and twist it in the right direction so that it fits correctly. I found that it is easier to just leave the head pointing straight up. This makes the overall length of the folded tripod a little longer (maybe an inch), but it still fits easily into the carrying bag. Leaving the head up makes setup a little faster, and for me is an acceptable compromise for better usability. I recommend this to other photographers. Pros: 1. very light weight and compact, 2. easy to carry around with the included carrying case, 3. sturdy when setup 4. good value Cons: 1. The legs are very stiff (hopefully it will get better with more use) 2. positioning the head when folding up the tripod is tricky

Rated 2 out of 5 by from didn't trust it with my 5Dmark3 This tripod is rated for 17lbs. but with the center shaft extended up all the way it is top heavy and there is a lot of camera shake. It may work fine for the smaller DSLR camera. I have tried both of the Befree tripods and ended up getting the elements big tripod the legs spread out a little farther and less camera shake when center shaft is extended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A wonderful tripod! An excellent one. Compact and sturdy. I use it with my Nikon D750 and the 24-120mm f/4 lens frequently. The tension control and locking on the ball head is very nice as you can't inadvertently loosen the ball once tension is set. Unfortunately, this is not properly documented in the manual. The head comes with the standard Manfrotto RC2 QR but I changed it to Arca-Swiss type which is more universal.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Plastic in quick release. It was my fault. I was on crutches and tried to do a shoot my Pastor had requested. As I crutched my tripod thru swinging doors, well it fell and broke the plastic quick release assembly broke. My fault. I have a 70 to 200 tamron with an Arca Swiss mount. I switched to a Slik ball head and I love it.
