Manfrotto Befree overview

  • 1Description

Sporting a 17.6 lb load capacity at a weight of only 3.6 lb, this black Befree Advanced Travel Tripod from Manfrotto is a robust support option that can serve as a convenient travel companion for professional photographers and passionate hobbyists alike. It is made of aluminum alloy and reaches a maximum height of 59.1" with its column extended, folding down to 15.7" in length for simplified transport in its included carrying case.

Each leg of the Befree Advanced is composed of four sections, which can be adjusted and securely locked into place with the QPL lever locks found on all segments. A side-pull selector allows you to set up the tripod at three different angle configurations, enabling low angle shooting with the simple push of a button. Complementing the legs is an equally sturdy center ball head, which offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use. The final element is a quick release plate, which offers dual compatibility for RC2 and Arca-type compatible systems, except for the Manfrotto 804-3W and MH804-3W tripod heads.

An Easy Link attachment is available at the top portion of the leg section, and allows you to connect compatible accessories such as flashes or reflectors. This enables you to use the tripod as a support system and reduce the amount of gear you need to carry while travelling. Rubberized feet are used to avoid skidding and help keep the Befree Advanced stable in most types of terrain. Finally, an integrated hook found at the bottom can be used to add a weight and increase the stability of your tripod when shooting in more difficult conditions.

    Manfrotto Befree reviews

Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with 494 Ball Head (Lever Locks, Black) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb even with pro camera and pro lens I had been searching for ages for a lightweight small packing tripod which would support my Canon 5D MK111 and 24-70 L 2.8mm. Originally I was looking at the BeFree but the specs said it only supported 4KG’s. Then in December 2017 I found the Manfrotto has released an ‘advanced’ version that takes 8kilos. Despite reading the usual reviews and worries about suitability for pro gear I ordered one. I have to say I delighted. I am have put shooting all weekend and also in some extremely high winds. The BeFree advanced has been superb and supporting my pro gear. The ball head locks tight and the tripod is sturdy. There is some movement when the tripod is at full length when in high winds but what do you expect! The tripod is very light and packs nicely into my day pack. Very easy and quick to erect and and pack away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for travel I did purchase this through a local vendor due to time constraints but still wanted to leave a review. I found that it is only a half pound heavier than its carbon fiber counterpart. I didn't use the ball head much but it did come in extremely handy on a vertical shot with my D850 and 16-35. Since it has a 3/8" thread on the center column, I used my Manfrotto 128 RC Quick Realease micro fluid head for smooth buttery video. Worked like a charm. I don't like the plastic pieces for the quick release mechanism as my other manfrotto gear is all metal. I love how it folds backwards to cover up the center column top which also protects it from getting dinged up on the threads. Overall satisfied as it proved to be perfect for backpacking. I strapped it to my Lowepro backpack which had a convenient tripod holder at its base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong, compact, and light weight I've been using a rather heavy Manfrotto for years and it has served me well, but I wanted a light weight, compact model for when I have to walk or hike to a shooting site. I have tried a couple of other brands that are truly light weight but hardly rigid and steady enough and they have a fixed leg spread that is not really wide enough for some situations. This Befree tripod fits my needs perfectly: light weight, sturdy, compact, and variable leg spread. A very good safety feature is that the leg locks cannot accidentally be bumped and released -- you must move the leg back slightly from its spread position in order to operate the release lock levers. Wish I had not procrastinated so long before buying one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Note that only the PLATE is Arca-Swiss compatible Seems like a great travel tripod, pretty hefty even for it's small size. The ball head is a nice compromise of size/weight vs. robustness; seems to lock down nicely. The special Sony Alpha plate is worth mentioning. Other plates I have had sometimes will rotate when you're trying to lock things down. This plate has a lip that holds against edge of the camera body and prevents this. Works very well. There are two sets of grooves on the plate, one for Manfrotto's RC-2 and another for Arca-Swiss. The only issue I have with this tripod is that I thought the head would also be Arca-Swiss compatible. It is not; so I cannot use my RRS base plate. Not sure whether I will return the tripod because of this issue, use the included Manfrotto plate, or swap the included head for an Arca-Swiss head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel tripod for A7RIII or any Sony mirrorless This replaces a Sirui t-004xb that I just found way too flimsy for my expensive camera. For anyone looking at this - as far as I can tell it is exactly the same as the normal BeFree Advanced, but it has Sony orange colors and comes with a custom rc2 plate designed to fit alpha cameras with a lip on the front. Nothing else is different and any rc2 plate will fit in the ballhead mount. I've got a Peak Design dual plate on mine now that works perfectly. Pros - sturdy tripod for my a7r3 + 16-35 GM lens (about 5lbs). The legs are noticeably more rigid than the sirui. - quick setup - compact size when folded all the way down - lever locks - personal preference but there's no guessing when they're latched tight. Cons - heavier than other travel tripods, but it seems unless you go carbon fiber you're losing rigidity to drop under 3lbs. - side hook seems flimsy Overall I'm pleased with it for the limited testing I've done this week both setup for astro on my roof and in overall portability carrying it around attached to my messenger bag. The real test will be the next few international trips as I lug it everywhere with me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best travel tripod by far Brought this with me during our trip to Scotland, it's amazing how stable and sturdy this tripod can do for its convenient, compact, lightweight size. Although it still cant compete with Manfrotto 055XPRO series in terms of stability (obviously since 055 has thicker, heavier legs), it does the job. Tried 30 sec exposure on different weather conditions, and the results i got were great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slight learning curve but love it There are some fine points about adjusting positions that took some deductive mastering, but this tripod is sturdy and yet extremely portable. As a rule I hate working with a tripod, but my yearning for excruciatingly sharp images often makes one a necessity. This is a great tripod for a tripod-hater like me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Controls (and Quick Replace Plate) Very Hard To Use The quick replace plate that is supposed to be designed for Sony A7 cameras is difficult to use and almost impossible to remove. Leg latch controls are stiff and hard to use. A real disappointment. I have a Davis & Sanford Traverse TR684C-36 that works much better - the quick replace plate is much easier to use. I even have a 20 year old Slik M300 tripod that is easier to use. Don't be tempted by the "built for A7" advertising.
