Manfrotto MKBFRLA-BHUS overview

  • 1Description

Sporting a 17.6 lb load capacity at a weight of only 3.6 lb, this black and orange Befree Advanced Travel Tripod from Manfrotto is specially designed for the Sony Alpha a7 and a9 cameras, featuring matching graphics and a dedicated quick release plate. It is made of aluminum alloy and reaches a maximum height of 59.1" with its column extended, folding down to 15.7" in length for simplified transport in its included carrying case.

Each leg of the Befree Advanced is composed of four sections, which can be adjusted and securely locked into place with the QPL lever locks found on all segments. A side-pull selector allows you to set up the tripod at three different angle configurations, enabling low angle shooting with the simple push of a button. Complementing the legs is an equally sturdy center ball head, which offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use.

The final element is a dedicated 200PL-Pro quick release plate, which is made specifically for the Sony a7 and a9 series mirrorless cameras. It is bright orange to match the body details and offers dual compatibility for RC2 and Arca-type quick release systems. As the plate is specially designed and has an anti-twist lip, please note that other non-Sony equipment may not fit on it adequately.

An Easy Link attachment is available at the top portion of the leg section, and allows you to connect compatible accessories such as flashes or reflectors. This enables you to use the tripod as a support system and reduce the amount of gear you need to carry while travelling. Rubberized feet are used to avoid skidding and help keep the Befree Advanced stable in most types of terrain. Finally, an integrated hook found at the bottom can be used to add a weight and increase the stability of your tripod when shooting in more difficult conditions.

  • Designed for the Sony a7 and a9 series cameras, with a matching black and orange color pattern and specially designed QR plate
  • Weighs 3.6 lb, can hold up to 17.6 lb of gear
  • Four leg sections which extend and fasten via its lever locks
  • Maximum height of 59.1", folds down to 15.7" in length for storage
  • Aluminum-alloy construction
  • Side button allows you to select between three different leg angles
  • Ball head with separate pan lock and friction control knobs
  • Quick release plate designed to fit the Sony Alpha a7 and a9 cameras, and compatible with both RC2 and Arca-type systems
  • Rubberized feet provide increased stability on most surfaces

    Manfrotto MKBFRLA-BHUS reviews

Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with 494 Ball Head (Lever Locks, Sony Alpha Edition) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Note that only the PLATE is Arca-Swiss compatible Seems like a great travel tripod, pretty hefty even for it's small size. The ball head is a nice compromise of size/weight vs. robustness; seems to lock down nicely. The special Sony Alpha plate is worth mentioning. Other plates I have had sometimes will rotate when you're trying to lock things down. This plate has a lip that holds against edge of the camera body and prevents this. Works very well. There are two sets of grooves on the plate, one for Manfrotto's RC-2 and another for Arca-Swiss. The only issue I have with this tripod is that I thought the head would also be Arca-Swiss compatible. It is not; so I cannot use my RRS base plate. Not sure whether I will return the tripod because of this issue, use the included Manfrotto plate, or swap the included head for an Arca-Swiss head.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel tripod for A7RIII or any Sony mirrorless This replaces a Sirui t-004xb that I just found way too flimsy for my expensive camera. For anyone looking at this - as far as I can tell it is exactly the same as the normal BeFree Advanced, but it has Sony orange colors and comes with a custom rc2 plate designed to fit alpha cameras with a lip on the front. Nothing else is different and any rc2 plate will fit in the ballhead mount. I've got a Peak Design dual plate on mine now that works perfectly. Pros - sturdy tripod for my a7r3 + 16-35 GM lens (about 5lbs). The legs are noticeably more rigid than the sirui. - quick setup - compact size when folded all the way down - lever locks - personal preference but there's no guessing when they're latched tight. Cons - heavier than other travel tripods, but it seems unless you go carbon fiber you're losing rigidity to drop under 3lbs. - side hook seems flimsy Overall I'm pleased with it for the limited testing I've done this week both setup for astro on my roof and in overall portability carrying it around attached to my messenger bag. The real test will be the next few international trips as I lug it everywhere with me.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Controls (and Quick Replace Plate) Very Hard To Use The quick replace plate that is supposed to be designed for Sony A7 cameras is difficult to use and almost impossible to remove. Leg latch controls are stiff and hard to use. A real disappointment. I have a Davis & Sanford Traverse TR684C-36 that works much better - the quick replace plate is much easier to use. I even have a 20 year old Slik M300 tripod that is easier to use. Don't be tempted by the "built for A7" advertising.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Received TWO defective tripods... still waiting on my third The tripod feels like it has great build quality, and the pieces that work, seem to work quite well. Unfortunately, Manfrotto seems to have a quality control issue because the first tripod I received had a defective leg that would not lock and had a clear issue with the locking mechanism. The second tripod I received (as a replacement to the first) had an impossibly tight ball head that was completely unusable. How hard is it, to fidget for 20 seconds with a $200 tripod to make sure its built to spec? Hopefully the third one works as intended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Received broken leg lock I just received my brand new befree and 1 of the leg locks will not depress all the way down where I need a flat head screwdriver to close it...contacted manfrotto and the have yet to get back to me and it’s been over a week

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony Alpha Edition Tripod This is an absolute must for anyone with the Sony a7 series. This met all my needs with a strong and sturdy base. The mount was spot on and you have to love the color matched scheme. Any amateur or professional will tell you the one thing you can't go cheap on is a tripod. This is a great first purchase to protect your investment and taking your photography to the next level. Highly recommend it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from its good but, what about the quality? Well, yes its light and sturdy. Looks great and I think its very stable, however the unit that I received had a broken lever lock. I found it really disappointing as this is gear that I plan to use almost daily and this doesn't give me great confidence on their longevity. Im waiting for my replacement. I hope this one is better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Travel Option The build quality of this is fantastic as with other manfrotto tripods. Only issue is the clamps to flip the legs tend to stick when attempting to pack the tripod up. The burnt orange color accents are a nice touch for Sony camera's but purely cosmetic. Lightweight and compact, it's a solid pick.
