Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tri... Overview

Sporting a 19.8 lb load capacity at a weight of only 3.4 lb, this red Befree Advanced Travel Tripod from Manfrotto is a robust support option that can serve as a convenient travel companion for professional photographers and passionate hobbyists alike. It is made of aluminum alloy and reaches a maximum height of 59.1" with its column extended, folding down to 15.7" in length for simplified transport in its included carrying case.

Each leg of the Befree Advanced is composed of four sections, which can be adjusted and secured in seconds thanks to the M-lock twist locks that operate with a simple 90° turn. A side-pull selector allows you to set up the tripod at three different angle configurations, enabling low angle shooting with the simple push of a button. Complementing the legs is an equally sturdy center ball head, which offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use. The final element is a quick release plate, which offers dual compatibility for RC2 and Arca-type compatible systems, except for the Manfrotto 804-3W and MH804-3W tripod heads.

An Easy Link attachment is available at the top portion of the leg section, and allows you to connect compatible accessories such as flashes or reflectors. This enables you to use the tripod as a support system and reduce the amount of gear you need to carry while travelling. Rubberized feet are used to avoid skidding and help keep the Befree Advanced stable in most types of terrain. Finally, an integrated hook found at the bottom can be used to add a weight and increase the stability of your tripod when shooting in more difficult conditions.

  • Weighs 3.4 lb, can hold up to 19.8 lb of gear
  • Four leg sections which extend and fasten via its twist locks
  • Maximum height of 59.1", folds down to 15.7" in length for storage
  • Aluminum-alloy construction

Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tri... Reviews

Stronger Than you'd Think

This tripod turned out to be much stronger and better built than I imagined. I have been very impressed with the strength, quality, adjustments, and flexibility of the unit. And certainly, it folds into a small package without much sacrifice on total height. To me the flip locks are more useful than the twist locks. I would have considered the carbon model if it had twist locks. I originally planned to use a RRS-30 ball head on this tripod but the ball head that comes with the unit seems well done where I won't be needing the RRS-30.

What I was looking for!

I already had a very nice tripod (Manfrotto) and ballhead, but it was too large to travel with. Carrying it was impractical because of the size and weight. I was reluctant to purchase something that seemed less stable, but this Befree does the job. It fold and unfolds quickly, the ballhead is sufficient, and it fits into a very nice and manageable carrying case. I took it out last week on a trip to the Nature Center here and was able to carry it around for 3 hours without impeding my ability to shoot or maneuver around,

Bought this on black Friday sale because of the price and Manfrotto brand name. It is much sturdier than any other travel tripod I have owned and I prefer the lever lock legs over the twist locks that most others have. I would highly recommend this model.

Great tripod for travel or day to day things. It's light and folds up nice in it's own bag. Quick replace plate is a great feature as well.

I have a Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel ...

I have a Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Aluminum Tripod with 494 Ball Head (Twist Locks, Red), does it work on Canon R5 body? Can I just use the 200PL RC2 type arca-Swiss plate or need to use something else, like RRS plate?
Asked by: Philip
Success with the 494 ball head and the R5 will depend on the lens you're using. Heavier combinations, like the 100-500mm and 28-70mm f/2 might see limited success when the ball head is used in various positions. The 494 ball head does not accept arca-swiss style plates. However, the 200PLPro plate that comes with it is compatible with arca-swiss ball heads (it's weird, I know). The 494 will accept 200PL and 200PLPro plates, so it will work on an R5 without an RRS plate or L-bracket.

can the Wimberley 200-II Gimbol head be mounted on this tripod?
Asked by: William L.
The Befree has a standard 3/8-16 mounting thread, and I have used different heads on mine. Your Wimberley Gimbal head should have that same standard thread so I see no reason why it cannot be mounted on this tripod. The only downside is that this tripod comes with a 494 ball head which you will remove, and unless you have some other use for it, you might want to consider a travel tripod that comes without a head (B&H lists 54 of them).
