Azden SGM-250MX Overview

By B&H Photo's

The Azden SGM-250MX is a short shotgun microphone that features a shockmount for easy camera mounting and a hardwired 13" output cable with a mini-XLR connector for use with various compact cinema cameras. It plugs into the balanced mini-XLR audio input of the camera—which must be capable of delivering phantom power—and offers superior audio quality with less noise than the camera's 3.5mm audio input. Specifically tuned to preserve the natural qualities of a speaking subject, the mic provides video creators with a cost-effective solution for TV, documentary, and film applications.

The SGM-250MX features a supercardioid polar pattern and a custom-designed acoustic tube with high-precision, phase-canceling slots that minimize the recording of extraneous noise while focusing on the sound in front of the camera. The highly sensitive capsule delivers a flat frequency response (20 Hz to 20 kHz) with low self-noise and 130 dB SPL, for accurate audio capture.

Handcrafted in Japan, the SGM-250MX is housed in a brass/aluminum alloy case that improves durability and rejects ambient radio frequencies (RF). The SMH-X shockmount with two diameter expander sheets provides a secure hold for your mic, whether you run-and-gun or mount it to a pistol grip or to a boompole.

I just bought it, no idea how to mount it on BMPCC 4K, HELP ME PLEASE?
Asked by: shine
You're going to need some type of camera cage for your BMPCC 4K with a cold shoe mount. I've been using this mic for my 6K with a full Tilta cage, but there are other, cheaper options out there.

HOW TO INSTALL THIS MIC ON bmpcc 4k, should I buy anything additional?
Asked by: shine
For my setup, I purchased a SMALLRIG FULL CAGE FOR BMPCC 4K. This provides accessory mounting and protection for my camera. This cage features multiple mounting points including NATO rails, 1/4"-20 & 3/8"-16 mounting threads, ARRI-style accessory mounts and cold shoe. In order to attach the Mike to the camera cage you will need a rig with a cold shoe mount. The good thing is most cages comes with a cold shoe to attach this mic.

Is it compatible with Z CAM E2C Professional 4K Cinema Camera?
Asked by: Hamilton
The Azden SGM-250MX Mini-XLR Short Shotgun Microphone for Blackmagic Pocket Cinema requires phantom power to function and it has a TA3 male connector, so it is not directly compatible for use with the Z CAM E2C Professional 4K Cinema Camera which has a 3.5mm mic input. It will require adapters and a phantom supply to enable compatibility. As a compatible option for the same type of microphone, you can use the Azden SGM-250 Shotgun Microphone (B&H # AZSGM250) which can operate using a AA battery and an XLR female to 3.5mm TRS male cable to connect directly to the camera.

Is the hardwired mini xlr cable long enough to mount this on the top handle of the blackmagic 4k/6k Tilta cage?
Asked by: Nik
We have not tried the microphone with the Tilta cage specifically. But based on our testing with similar cages, the SGM-250MX's cable does have plenty of length to reach the camera's mic input when mounted to the top handle. For reference, the SGM-250MX's cable is 13 inches long.
