Heil Sound PR 40 Dynamic Cardioid Front-Address Studio Microphone (Champagne)

The PR 40 Dynamic Cardioid Studio Microphone in champagne from Heil Sound is a high-performance dynamic microphone ideal for use as a vocal mic for talk-show hosts and other voice-over applications. The large dynamic element produces a smooth response with an articulate and natural midrange. The size of the diaphragm, combined with a low mass and an efficient NdFeB magnet structure, allow the microphone to achieve a wide dynamic range and capture high SPLs, making it a great kick drum mic as well.

This front-address microphone has 4 rear ports to reject off-axis noise, resulting in a smooth, tight cardioid pickup pattern with reduced proximity effect. The steel body and internal humbucking coil shield the microphone, making it safe for use near video monitors and noisy lighting fixtures. An internal Sorbothane shockmount decouples the microphone's dynamic element from the body to reduce the effects of handling noise.

Auray BAI-2X Two-Section Broadcast Arm with Internal Springs and Integrated XLR Cable

The Auray BAI-2X is a two-section broadcast arm with internal springs and an integrated XLR cable. This versatile and sturdy broadcast arm is great for studio as well as home use. It's ideal for broadcast, voiceover, and podcasts.

The BAI-2X broadcast arm is designed with internal springs that provide a clean and sleek look. The internal balance springs are precision engineered to support and hold in place microphones of up to 5 lb / 2.27kg. The design also minimizes handling noise when re-positioning the arm. The broadcast arm features a standard 5/8"-27 microphone stud mount that is compatible with most shockmounts and microphone clips. The angle of the microphone stud mount can be adjusted and secured with the locking knob, and the angle is maintained when re-positioning the arm. This eliminates the need to readjust it every time the arm is moved. With an extension of up to 40 inches, and the ability to rotate the arm 360°, the BAI-2X allows for precise microphone placement.

The BAI-2X also features a heavy-duty combo mount that consists of a sturdy C-clamp and a heavy-metal desktop mount. The C-clamp is capable of fastening onto desktops up to 2.3" thick. The C-clamp's slim design minimizes the clearance needed to mount it between a desk and wall. The desktop mount detaches from the C-clamp and provides the option of permanent installation to a desktop with the mounting screws (included). A 14" riser is included for adding height to the broadcast arm in order to extend over computer or studio monitors.

Auray WCF-UB440 Foam Windscreen for Large-Diaphragm Condenser Mics

The Auray WCF-UB440 Foam Windscreen for the Senal UB-440 is made from specialty acoustic foam designed to reduce broadband wind noise with minimal high-frequency loss. The density of the foam is optimized to help protect the microphone element from vocal plosives and wind pressure without dramatically muffling the sound.

This windscreen is effective indoors for protection against drafts caused by air conditioners and can be used in calm to light outdoor breeze conditions (0 to 7 mph). It also reduces vocal plosives in close microphone placement situations. Users can generally expect a 4 to 8 dB reduction in wind noise, with very slight dampening of high frequencies. For most applications, the very slight high-frequency dampening is a worthwhile exchange for the notable wind noise reduction.

The WCF-UB440's foam is hypoallergenic and washable and helps prevent moisture and dirt from damaging your microphone. The windscreen has a height of 3.5" and is designed to fit over the Senal UB-440 as well as mics from AKG, Shure, Neumann, Mi-Tek, MXL, Behringer, SE Electronic, Rode, and most other large diaphragm condensers with a grille diameter larger than 2".

The WCF-UB440 Foam Windscreen for the Senal UB-440 is an effective solution for basic wind protection.

I love this mic for voiceovers and podcast use. I use the optional foam cover as well. It has a rich sound that's resistant to plosive capture and being dynamic it captures very little background noise. The end-fire pattern also makes it great in a multi-mic environment such as a radio studio or podcast with guests in the room. You can get by with minimal room treatments. I find that all I really need to edit out after a VO recording is breaths between captured phrases. Highly recommend.

Great broadcast mic. Great sound, solid build and good looking. We liked it so much we bought a second. The more we expand, the more of these we'll end up getting.

For podcasting, it's phenomenal

As a podcaster, this mic is absolutely ideal. The main draw? It's designed to pull in only the sounds closest to the microphone. That way, I can keep my fan on in the background, or perhaps a motorcycle can rumble by, and the mic keeps its focus on me! I'm not an audiophile, so I can't give you specifics. All I can tell you is that it does exactly what I need, and makes me sound like a professional.

VO Work on Instructional Videos

By Emmett B

I primarily use this mic for VO on company instructional videos. It has a generally flat response curve, making it ideal for adjusting your sound through an EQ. I also like its built-in shock isolation and pop filter. So I attach it directly to the mic arm using the provided hardware without anything extra. The accessory windscreen is relatively dense, so it being on or off does significantly affect the higher end. I'd say the PR40 a strong cardioid pickup pattern that requires the end of the mic to be pointed at the sound source (e.g. your mouth). Off-axis rejection is very good. Like all dynamics, the PR40's output will require a significant amount of preamp for voice work--around 60 dB in my case. I'm feeding a Universal Audio Apollo Twin that has a maximum 65 dB of preamp. So instead of turning it to 60 dB, I use a Triton FetHead between this mic and the Apollo. The FetHead is a class-A amplifier, and noise-free to my ears. This also means the Apollo pre is operating at a leisurely 30 dB of gain instead of 60 dB. The FetHead does require phantom power from your interface or mixer. Amazed!!

I've heard many high praises for the PR 40, but never paid much attention. Then, finally, I had the need for a better mic, and I started looking around at all the microphones out there and I saw the PR 40. I thought I'd take a chance and buy it without being able to try it first (due to everything being closed because of COVID-19). What the heck, why not? I was blown away! What a difference it makes! I paired it with an XLR to USB interface so I could connect it to a computer. Now I sound like a million bucks! Use one and you won't want to use ANYTHING else.

You will need to use an Audio Interface between the mic and computer. This turns the analog signal of the mic into a digital signal that your computer can use and record. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1194649-REG/esi_esi_m22u_maya22_usb_flexible_high.html

is there a stand that I can use with this (already have a boom arm)?
Asked by: Donielle
This is a large mic, but it comes with a standard adapter so you can screw it onto the end of a mic stand (boom or otherwise). It should work with any standard mic stand. If you want a shock mount around the body, be sure to get a large one that can fit approx 46mm-53mm.
