Leofoto LB-60N Overview

The LB-60N Leveling Base with Butterfly Handle and 60mm Plate from Leofoto acts like a 75mm half ball, providing +/-15° of leveling range capability. It locks easily and securely in position with the twist of the large butterfly handle at the base of the ball. This leveling base installs on any tripod leg set has a standard 3/8" threaded mounting stud.

The anti-twist safety screw design uses three set screws on the spider to secure the ball head in place on top of the leveling base.

After a bit of trouble ordering the larger (incorrect) version of this head B&H got me a return label and promptly shipped this 60mm version. It is very securely holding my Nilon D850/Z8 with Nikon 200-400 F4 (beast!) on the LeFoto Gimbal head. Lots of adjustment range for leveling and the ball lock is secure. When I had questions LeFoto answered their phone and had expert knowledge of their products. It is made in China but very well designed and constructed. I'm impressed!

Good build quality but too stiff

Upon opening the box I found that this base comes in a quality draw string pouch that has a leather or faux leather lower half. It would be a good pouch for a small lens. I also found this levelling base to be a perfect fit for the Leofoto LS-323CX tripod I ordered it for. However, once in use I noticed that even fully unlocked the levelling function is too stiff. A heavy body/lens combo can mostly over come this, but that is not the rig this 60mm mount is meant for. Using it fully unlocked with a Nikon Z6III and the 24-120 F4 S-line lens I found myself hunting for level way more than I like. While it's a positive point that applying full lock once it's level doesn't change the position, that doesn't make up for the frustration required to get there. This unit's stiffness is in comparison to larger 75mm half-bowl type levelling bases on full size tripods. My experience with those bases is that they move smoothly and freely when unlocked, making it easy to find level. The stiffness in this base when fully unlocked leads to the same frustration I have with Leofoto's small fluid heads like the BV-5. I need fluid heads and leveling bases that move smoothly with no jerkiness, and not equipment that tries to protect me from myself at the expense of its core functionality. Perhaps I received an out of spec sample, or perhaps it just needs a lot more break-in time. Either way, I'm not at all blown away by the 'new out of the box' experience. I give it 3.25 out of 5 stars.

The overview describes the grub screws securing ...

The overview describes the grub screws securing the tripod head to the top of this device, and one of the photos shows an allen wrench going into a hole on the bottom plate. Is this to secure the device to the tripod so it doesn't unscrew?

i finally figured out what these holes are for. All they do is assist you screwing on the leveling base. So you're not cranking on the butterfly which may over-tighten it.
