I've been using Nikon's Arcrest protective filters (both original and Arcrest II filters) on a long list of lenses for several years now. Love the quality of the glass, the protective coatings, thinness of the filters and resulting light weight on the end of a lens. There are cheaper protective filters to be found, but these are well worth the cost IMHO.
Protective filters help in two ways. First, naturally, take the damage when things go wrong. Second, make the front surface flat and easy to clean when lens' own front element is awkwardly curved. This filter is easy to clean as it apparently has some coatings that help with that too. I tested this filter on Nikon 105/2.8 and a bigger version on Nikon 24-70/2.8. No loss of resolution, though I eyeballed that at high magnification, no scientific tests. I do not see any color casts. There is practically no reflections or flares. If I try hard enough I can get some very faint reflection of a crazy bright light source, but at that point lens itself usually produces more visible flares on its own.
