Nikon 7246 overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon 12x50 Action Extreme ATB Binocular is an ideal optic for boaters who often find themselves scanning the water for shoals, shore, and buoys or just trying to identify obstacles on rough or rolling seas. To help mitigate the disorientation and discomfort often experienced when looking through high-power binoculars on the water, the Action Extreme has a wide field of view and a generous exit pupil that keep the entire scene in view and minimize the movement of the horizon line, plus a comfortable eye relief that provides the room to back the eyes off the eyepieces for a more comfortable viewing position. The traditional Porro prism design, when combined with the over-sized objective lenses, BAK4 prism glass, and anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics, delivers immersive high-contrast views that are bright and sharp, with accurate colors and a rich depth of field so users can differentiate the relative distance between objects in the view—even in low light.

Complementing this optical performance are design details that allow the Action Extreme to withstand the rigors of outdoor life. The Porro prism design has an inherently balanced and comfortable feel in the hand for long-duration observation sessions, and the chassis is wrapped in a rubber armor that provides a sure and reliable grip in cold and wet weather. Its optical tubes are nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof, and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature and environmental conditions. Because of the high magnification and large objectives, hand holding the binocular for long periods can cause fatigue and excessive hand shake, so Nikon made it tripod mountable for easy and convenient hands-free use. A tethered one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as they hang around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them, and the object lens caps can clip onto the neck strap to keep them safe from blowing overboard or being lost on the forest floor.

From the trail, to the range, to the boat, the 12x50 Action Extreme binocular is engineered to deliver the high-power long-distance performance required by discerning observers—especially boaters and avid outdoor enthusiasts who won't let inclement weather and rough seas keep them at home or in a safe harbor.

Optical Performance
  • Powerful 12x magnification allows detailed observations of distant subjects on land and sea
  • Large 50mm objective lenses provide improved low-light performance versus smaller-objective models, ensuring images are bright even in challenging conditions
  • Traditional Porro prism design makes it comfortable to hold and presents a rich depth of field
  • High-index BAK4 prisms deliver a round exit pupil and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics produce neutral and accurate color fidelity and improve contrast and image brightness
  • Wide 60° apparent angle of view minimizes the appearance of visible hand shake and the disorientation often felt when using high-power optics on rough or rolling seas
  • 288-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Large textured and slip-resistant center fast-focusing knob is easy to manipulate in cold or wet weather or while wearing gloves
  • Right-eye dioptric correction enables users to compensate for individual optical prescriptions for clearer views; large adjustment lever is easy to find and use
  • 56-72mm interpupillary adjustment range allows use by a wide variety of people
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with optional adapter that enables hands-free use to eliminate hand shake/vibrations and arm fatigue
  • Comfortable 16.1mm eye relief helps to reduce eyestrain and improves viewing comfort
  • 4.2mm exit pupil will completely cover most pupils to keep the full scene in view and limit disorientation, even as pupils open and dilate in low light
Construction Details
  • Environmentally friendly prisms and lenses feature Eco-Glass that is made without lead and arsenic
  • Protective textured rubber armoring provides a slip-resistant grip in cold or wet weather

Nikon 7246 reviews

12x50 Action Extreme ATB Binocular is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sweet spot, durable, comfortable These are excellent for the price. The sweet spot is brilliant with great detail, color, and 3D feeling. But, the rim of the FOV is distorted. This is too be expected at this price-point. If you are concentrating on a little bird in the sweet spot, you may not notice the distortion at all, but it is there. Panning will make it more obvious. They feel very sturdy and comfortable in my hands. I wear glasses and have no problem. I have owned them for 15 years. They are my backyard binoculars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine Optics Optical technology has come a long way since I bought my last pair of binoculars about a decade ago. I wanted a kind of universal binoculars that would work well in daytime (wildlife viewing), and reasonably well at nighttime (astronomy). These Nikons are amazing! The optical clarity of this unit is impressive. I could clearly see the faces of sea lions from nearly a mile away, and I could see the the full moon with a new level clarity, like never before :)At this price point, I could not be happier with the performance of these binoculars, and the $ gift card only sweetened the deal. On a somewhat negative note, these binoculars are 12x50. They bring distant images right up to you, but all those lenses have their weight. These binoculars might be a little heavy for some individuals to handle. For me however, the clarity and performance justify the weight. So what if my arms need a break? I have something to look forward to, literally.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Quality Optics - Amazing Value I bought this for my father as a gift. I'm a professional photographer and wanted to get something really great for his casual use from his deck watching wildlife. I considered the Canon stabilizer but was blown away by the power and clarity of these 12x50. I viewed the 3/4 moon today and could see the finest detail of all the craters and surface. Terrific value and I couldn't get anywhere close to the power without spending close to $1,000 with the Canon (love to own the Canon too). I'll be buying a pair for my boating and more moon watching. What a marvel!.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just want I wanted! I was looking specifically for binoculars that have a 10-12x magnification, but I was willing to pay extra for a larger objective lens diameter (the light-gathering lens), 50 mm in this case, and for weather-sealing (for peace of mind in all conditions). I also needed something eyeglass-friendly, and a good, non-slippery grip would be a bonus. These ones fit the bill perfectly. Objects appear bright and tack-sharp. Some reviewers complain about heaviness. Well for one thing, better magnification and larger objective lenses mean more weight. And to me, more weight also means better quality components are being used. I remember one reviewer mentioning that 12x is hard to hand-hold for steady images. I've found this to be true even if you brace your arms carefully, and trying to rest them on a handrail has left scuff marks on them. So I've invested in one of the Nikon tripod adaptors, but just beware to get one designed for the Action EX series. I would knock off 1/2 star for the mediocre included strap and case, but I suppose this is expected for this price range. You'll have to spend more to get good third-party options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from why buy more qualilty than this? Spectacularly high resolution lenses are crucial for large blow-ups of photographs. For binoculars, what you want is good-enough resolution, and these Nikon binoculars are quite good enough. Also, they're exceptionally easy to use with glasses. In fact, these are the first binoculars I've owned that actually allow me to have true binocular vision. Their accommodation to eyeglass-wearers is spot-on. I paid rather little for these, so I cannot understand why anyone would pay a thousand bucks for higher quality that the human eye cannot discern. I almost ordered the 16X50, and I'm glad I didn't, for I can just manage to hold these 12X50 steady. I've got to believe you need a tripod for 16X50. Nikon is golden, but so is B&H. I've never had a bad experience with B&H, and I actually learn from their e-mails. They're honest, reliable, competitively priced, and eager--the very best mail-order house I've ever known.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Has one of the best optics I ever used. Very strongly built. Excellent resolution and color reproduction. Slightly out of focus in the 10% in the rim. Overall, very satisfied.
