How can this microphone claim so much greater ...
How can this microphone claim so much greater directionality (down 14 dB at 60 degrees off-axis) than other shotgun microphones of similar physical length. Is it a typo?
I am honestly surprised at how good this mic is compared to the NTG2 and my Zoom shotgun mics. It is just stronger, cleaner and yes, more directional. It's still just s shotgun mic, not a lav. But it is impressive. I was surprised.

question
Is this mic compatible with DSLR cameras? I have a Canon 5D mark III and am looking for on on-camera shotgun mic.
The NTG1 requires power in order to operate that is supplied by the device the mic is connected to. unfortunately this is not able to be supplied by the cameras mini jack output. For the 5D mkIII and similar cameras you will need an additional adapter that is able to provide the power to the mic such as a Beachtek DXA-SLR ULTRA, which will allow the connection of 2 mics, level control, metering and limiters to protect from overload. Alternatively a battery powered mic will also work directly connected. The NTG-2 would be an example.

question
Can this microphone be used with a AA battery for source of power also?
No. It uses phantom power exclusively. The NTG2 can use batteries.

question
Does this microphone have to be mounted on a camera? We are using a teleprompter so we need a mic that can stand alone and not have to be mounted to our camera.
We use this as a boom mic which is on a boompole (fish pole) connected to a C-stand that hangs over the talent (speaker). The C stand is weighed down by two 30LB sand bags. You will also need a Matthelini clamp to attach the boom to the C-stand.

question
What is the difference between NTG 1 and NTG 2
I have both. The NTG2 uses a AA battery. Ive seen specs that claim there is a tiny bit of difference in performance but it depends on your size restrictions and phantom power requirements. The NTG1 is great on most of my cams and in podcasts where the space might be an issue and upplying power to it isnt a problem. Recently I started.using a Tascam 70D the power drain is so bad on it I will often switch to the NTG2 to save battery on the mixer/recorder.

question
How far from the subject this mic can record with quality? Is it good for advertising production?
Lots of variables here, but generally you should be within a couple of feet of the sound source - less if it is a noisy environment. This is more an aspect of proper location sound technique in general, rather than the quality of this particular mic. This mic is capable of very good quality sound, but even the most expensive mic will sound terrible if it is 10 ft from the subject.
