Quantum Instruments Turbo SC overview

  • 1Description

The Quantum Instruments Turbo SC Battery Pack Kit ("S" for Slim and "C" for Compact) provides typical all-day flash shooting capacity like the standard Turbo, yet weighs less than 1 lb and fits easily in a shirt pocket. This kit includes the CZ Dedicated Module (connection cable), which allows it to connect to Canon 430EZ, 480G, 540EZ, 550EX, 580EX, 580EX II*, MT-24EX and MR-14EX flash units.

State-of-the-art NiMH batteries power the Turbo SC for lightning-fast recycling times and high capacity. Despite its mini proportions, it provides up to 225 full-power flashes with Quantum's Qflash units, or 400 shoe mount flashes, on a single 1.5-hour charge. And, like all Quantum batteries, the Turbo SC features a computerized "fuel gauge" that clearly displays the amount of power remaining and monitors charging progress.

Note: * To use this battery pack with the Canon 580EX II flash, you will have to disable Flash Custom Function #01 on the flash.

Quantum Instruments Turbo SC reviews

Turbo SC Battery Pack with CZ Flash Cable is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Slow to Recycle I just purchased this battery to improve performance with the Canon 580EXII for outdoor sports and lifestyle shooting and to carry something lighter than the Jack Rabbit. I've read many reviews that rave about this battery but I gotta tell ya, what a disappointment! Yes it is light. Yes it recharges fast but the recycle time in ETTL and manual is maybe 25% faster than a fresh pair of AA's. For the price I expected much better performance. The Jack Rabbit runs circles around the Turbo SC and is significantly faster in recycle time and the charge lasts longer. Very overpriced underperforming battery!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quantum Turbo SC Battery with CZ Cable I have been using this with my Canon Speedlite 580 EX II for a little over a year now. This product works well if you read the literature and fully understand the indicators on the battery pack, how to connect and power up the unit, and most importantly how to set up the custom functions on your flash. For the Canon Speedlite 580 EX II you have to set the C.FN 12 to 1 for recycling with an external power source. Most people know this, but there was also a notice by Quantum that states you should set C.Fn 01 to 1 to disable the flash going to sleep mode. C.Fn 01 is a great feature if running on straight AA batteries, but if the flash goes to sleep the Quantum Turbo SC loses it's connection to the flash. You can determine if the Quantum Turbo SC has detected the connection to the flash by checking the yellow LED with the Flash symbol on the battery pack. If the LED is steady on you have a good connection to the flash. If the yellow LED is flashing it means that the high voltage has shutdown because the connection to the flash has not been detected. I am embarrassed to admit how long it took me to figure out why I wasn't getting the flash to fire as often as I was expecting it to when connected to the Turbo SC. Hopefully this will help somebody else out down the road.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic battery pack If you shoot events, weddings, news or rely heavily on flash in your photography then you should seriously consider having one of these battery packs in your kit. Simple to use, light (compared to other battery packs) and recharges in just 2 hours. It holds enough power for several hundred flash bursts. I have never come close to draining mine, even after a 10+ hour shoot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A sensible kit Given the necessity for a cable to connect the battery to the flash unit, and considering the price of buying the two items separately, this kit makes sense for the value. It should be noted that the battery does to include a shoulder strap, but currently Quantum offers a free strap for registering the product online.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT AND VERY COMPACT SIZE I am an IndyCar photographer. For the shots of drivers in car in helmet...you NEED a flash. This recycles amazingly fast and is way lighter and smaller than the original Turbo I have. I use this with my 580EX II Flash...and you MUST disable the custom function 01 in the flash to enable this to work. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT! If it makes a difference I shot with a EOS-1Ds Mark III...but battery pack is hooked to the flash unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Thin Endurance Used at wedding and event receptions. Keeps my Canon 580EX II Speedlight ready to fire and recycling as fast as with fresh internal batteries. After 3 hour party still had 3/4 charge left.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast Recharge Excellent for Indoor Sport Just Picked this up. Hooked up to Speedlite 580EXII. It is excellent for indoor basketball fast action shots. Hardly lost any shots as opposed to using the speedlite without it, which took too long to charge for a fast action sport like basketball. Excellent piece.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great while it lasts I loved the TSC ... while it worked. When the cell tanked two months out of warranty, I contacted Quantum for repair (another $100+) and was told it only carried a 90-day warranty. I've already invested $500+ with minimal use. For that price I expected better.
