Tiffen 52CGND6 overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 52mm Graduated 0.6 ND Filter is a graduated neutral density filter that helps to specifically darken skies and other bright areas of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a feathered line between the density and clear areas. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and the 0.6 density provides a 2 stop reduction in light from entering the lens.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

0.6 ND graduated filter for darkening skies and other bright areas of the image.
Feathered edge is neither soft nor hard, providing a natural-appearing taper between the density and clear areas of the filter.
Neutral density filters do not affect the overall coloration of the image.

Tiffen 52CGND6 reviews

52mm Graduated 0.6 ND Filter is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well-built, and a very good value I use this filter the standard way, to improve exposure dynamic range landscape shots with lots of bright sky. Out of the box the filter was very clean with no visible defects. Coated glass and metal, not plastic. The coating is excellent, cleans well and the image is very sharp. Fits my Nikon lenses firmly with a good snug to it, yet still can be unscrewed with ease when you need to. The outer ring turns smoothly but with just enough friction to hold in the position you leave it. I have not used it enough yet to gauge scratch-and-dent resistance, for me that usually takes several months. So far, a fine product and very good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't know how I lived without it!!! I use this on about half of all my landscape shots now, I think- I have NO idea how I lived so long without it. It sure saves time in post-processing! My ONLY request would be that Tiffen put a notch or bump on one side of the ring, so I could locate center top (or bottom) with absolute certainty by touch. It's not always easy to tell TTL on a bright day, so sometimes I get interesting special effects! Nonetheless- this is ALWAYS in my bag now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't leave home without it! Lowlight high contrast landscape shots are what I use this for. My full format D600 can capture a surprising contrast range even without using HDR (I gave up trying to figure out using this setting). The Grad ND filter makes that occasional extreme shot happen. Not an everyday use filter but I will always carry one along with a polarizer out in the field. The Tiffen was the easy choice. Glass and Made in USA were the usual reasons for selecting Tiffen. A round plastic case would be nice since its not a protector and I don't use the oversized one provided, but the great price and quality make this a non-issue of course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Works This is my 3rd Tiffen Grad ND Filter for the different lenses I use. They are compact and easy to tuck in gear bag. Sharpness is good, and they render great sky color. I just can't be buying adapters and carrying around flimsy filters that can bend or break in gear bag, so these work for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it needs to well! Great for the price, but ghosting is sometimes an issue, so if you cam afford multicoat, get that version. Very neutral, no detriment to white balance. STILL USEFUL FOR DIGITAL, SAVES YOU HOURS WORKING WITH RAW, because it fixes too-contrasty landscape scenes in the original file.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for scenery Using this to tone down the sky and bring out the clouds when taking pictures in Mesa Verde and Canyon de Chelly. It really brings out the rock formations without washing out the sky.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Inexpensive Alternative Will be using for sunrise/sunset shots. Great alternative to the more pricey options; can work around the vertical adjustment limitation.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fine for ND function but - I am experimenting with Nikkor AIS manual focus lenses for landscapes with my D800 as they have useful depth of field scales unlike the AF lenses. My 28mm f2 AIS is becoming a favorite but this filter vignettes the corners a large amount. A 28mm lens is common for landscapes but this filter is too thick to work with them - a bad design flaw in my book. I could expect some vignetting for a 24mm but not the common everyday 28mm focal length. With enough image cropping it works and does the job of balancing sky exposure to foreground and that is the only reason it got even 3 stars. This thing might be OK for DX but limited use for FX camera bodies. Not sure it would even work with a 35mm lens with the 52mm thread as cropping is so bad on my 28mm.
