Many photographers, attempting to postpone a major decision or save money, will buy a lens they believe will give them the results they desire, only to find that the lens does not perform as expected. When budget is a factor (and when isn’t it?), it’s important to select a telephoto lens that best serves your specific purposes. When it comes to sports and wildlife photography, the purposes are…

There is still one basic truth about photographing sports—access is everything. If you are not near the action, you will not get a photograph. Does this mean you need a sideline pass at the Super Bowl or a family member in the NBA? Sports photography is a true test for cameras. Perhaps more than any photo discipline, shooting sports photography leaves you little opportunity for a second chance and demands that your camera works at peak efficiency. Common sense says if you’re going to take sharp, dramatic photographs at a fast-action sporting event, make sure you have an autofocus lens that is at least 300mm or longer, and fast (f/2.8 or f/4) and, IMHO, preferably a zoom. As part of our coverage of Sports Week, I thought it might be fun to photograph the opening night of the 2021 racing season at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl…

When most of us think of “sports photography,” we immediately think of iconic images from the world of land-based sports—American football, track and field, boxing, baseball, and others. One could argue, however, that yacht racing and sailing regattas provide the canvas for some of the most spectacular images in all of sports. And, if you have spent time around the water, seen the framed print on…

Jean Fruth is a diehard baseball fan. “Growing up in New York, with two great hometown teams, how could you not connect with the sport?” she asks. As a teen, she worked in a restaurant owned by serious Mets fans who had season tickets, “And they would take me to games,” she reminisces. “And my grandfather was a Mets fan, listening to games on the radio.”
Such formative influences foreshadow her…

The moment I saw Tó Mané’s iconic 2013 photo of Garrett McNamara surfing an up to 100-foot wave in Nazaré, Portugal, I knew I was hooked. I write the words “up to,” because estimating wave size is not an exact science. It involves guesswork based on the surfer’s height, board length, the opinions of experts,…
