Making moves at CES is Canon, with its usual revamp of the PowerShot lineup. Practically every consumer-level point-and-shoot has been updated here, with the release of the PowerShot SX540 HS, PowerShot SX420 IS, PowerShot ELPH 360 HS, PowerShot ELPH 190 IS, and PowerShot ELPH 180 Digital Cameras.
Keeping the same long 50x optical zoom range of its predecessor, the PowerShot SX540 HS ups the ante with a new 20.3MP 1/2.3" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and the use of the DIGIC 6 processor. This improvement offers higher-resolution shooting and lower noise at high ISOs, as well as a fast continuous shooting rate. Video also gets a bump with the ability to record Full HD video at 60p in addition to 30p.
The lens remains the same as before, with a large 24-1200mm equivalent focal length, and it has multiple types of Intelligent IS to guarantee a sharp image at longer distances. Also, the Wi-Fi-capable camera is equipped with a 3.0" 461k-dot LCD monitor for composing images, as well as the Zoom Framing Assist and Hybrid Auto mode features of its predecessor. One new function is Story Highlights, enabling the camera to do the hard work by automatically compiling images and videos from a certain day or event into a mini reel with music and effects.
While not receiving as much of an upgrade as its bigger sibling, the PowerShot SX420 IS receives a couple of key enhancements to make taking photographs a bit better. Most notably, it receives Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, allowing users to connect instantly to their phone or tablet for transferring photos or videos. The lens receives an increase in zoom range to 42x from 40x and still features the Intelligent IS system of its predecessor. Additionally, it will be available in red or black.
Overall, the camera’s internals haven’t changed, relying on a 20.0MP sensor and the DIGIC 4+ processor to capture sharp images and HD 720p video with low noise. Also, it has a 3" LCD monitor for composition, as well as a variety of different Scene Modes in addition to Smart AUTO and ECO Modes.
The PowerShot ELPH 360 HS, on the other hand, didn’t receive any physical upgrades, but now comes with the Story Highlights function for automatically creating clips from images and video shot during a specific day or event. The camera is quite capable and lightweight, with a 25-300mm equivalent 12x optical zoom lens, a 20.2MP CMOS sensor, and the DIGIC 4+ processor, which enables the capture of Full HD 1080p video, as well as high-resolution stills. Other features include a 3" LCD monitor and Hybrid Auto and Creative Shot modes. This model is available in purple or silver.
For more budget-conscious consumers, Canon has released the PowerShot ELPH 190 IS and PowerShot ELPH 180, each of which will help users create better images than your average smartphone, while maintaining a compact form factor. Both cameras rely on a 20.0MP CCD sensor and the DIGIC 4+ processor to produce high-resolution images, as well as HD 720p video in a variety of settings. They are differentiated mainly by lenses, as the PowerShot ELPH 190 IS has a 10x optical zoom lens with image stabilizer, while the ELPH 180 has a slightly shorter image-stabilized 8x zoom. Specific to the ELPH 190 IS is the addition of Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity. Other shared features include Smart AUTO, ECO Mode, Scene Modes, and a Help Button. The ELPH 190 IS is available in black, blue, or red, while the ELPH 180 is available in red or silver.

wow, not even new paint jobs on these old models. seriously, these are not going to stop the flight to phone cameras.
Again, make me a RAW shooting $249 camera with a 24-100mm equiv, f1.8 with a 1/1.7 or 1" 10-16Mp CMOS sensor and we'll be talking.
And, scrap all the the other nonsense on these cameras that no one ever uses to pay for the sensor and better lens.
I have an Elph HS 340, it's really nothing special, and I paid $40 to trade up from a Elph LS150 which had been a gift.
I'm not sure I'd do it again hindsight being 20/20 I might have just returned it for the money and looked around at other options.
