NAMM 2019: Tascam Solutions for Recording Audio Anywhere

0Share

Tascam knows the need for high-quality audio recording isn't limited to the studio. Recording lectures, podcasts, meetings, interviews, ambience, sound effects, or music? All of it should be captured with the same uncompromising intention; get it and get it right. Considering that you may find yourself in anything from a lush forest of nature's finest to an acoustically treated studio fortress, Tascam has released a new line of portable audio recorders and audio interfaces that can join you wherever you go.

The smallest of the bunch, the DR-05X, packs 24-bit / 96 kHz stereo recording and two-channel USB audio interface functionality into a diminutive handheld enclosure with a bright backlit display and multi-language menus. It uses two onboard omnidirectional condenser mics in an A/B configuration, so you don't need to lug around your own microphones. With auto-recording, integrated peak reduction, overwrite mode, and non-destructive overdubbing, the DR-05X accommodates all kinds of workflows. There's even a jump-back function and adjustable playback speed. Pop in AA batteries for up to 17.5 hours of operating time, insert a microSDXC card (128GB maximum), hold it in your hand (or mount it to a tripod or camera), then get to work!

Just a tad taller, the DR-07X merges all the DR-05X's features with a different onboard microphone array. Its mics are unidirectional, and can be positioned in an A/B or X/Y configuration. Use A/B for a wider stereo image, or switch to X/Y for minimized phase discrepancies.

If you want that versatile A/B-X/Y mic array with more tracks and support for external balanced mic/line sources, you'll need the DR-40X. Of course, it's slightly larger, but it can still fit nicely in one hand or atop a DSLR. Dual internal mic preamps with 48 VDC phantom power are fed via Neutrik XLR-1/4" combo jacks. It boasts selectable record modes—traditional stereo, 4CH to accept two different stereo feeds, and Dual Recording for capturing the normal input and a safety take at a lower level (to avoid clipping). Extra bonus features include Mid-Side decoding and support for external control via Tascam's optional RC-3F footswitch and RC-10 wired remote.

Music producers, fear not: you've not been forgotten! Tascam has two new tabletop USB audio interfaces, Series 102i and Series 208i, both with bundled software such as Steinberg's DAW Cubase (and Cubasis for iPad), IK Multimedia AmpliTube guitar/bass amp modeling and effects, and T-RackS mastering software. They operate at up to 24-bit / 192 kHz resolution, and bring MIDI connectivity alongside analog and digital audio I/O. Plus, they have built-in DSP with reverb, compression, 4-band EQ, and polarity inversion.

The Series 102i offers ten inputs comprising eight optical digital channels and two analog XLR-1/4" mic/line/instrument combo inputs tied to Tascam's clean, transparent Ultra-HDDA mic preamps. Its outputs include dual 1/4" headphone jacks and two balanced 1/4" monitor/line outs.

The Series 208i is designed for more complex setups in project studios and live-event venues. It increases the I/O to include 16 channels of optical digital inputs, four XLR-1/4" combo jacks, dual headphone ports, two balanced monitor/line outs, and six balanced line outputs. Additionally, its rear panel presents BNC jacks for 75-Ohm word clock I/O with selectable input termination, making it easy to synchronize with other digital devices.
