Before spending a week attending Krista Rossow’s “The New World of Travel Photography” class at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, I was guilty of more than one bad habit. Confession: I am a bag lady. I have a closet full of them. It’s not uncommon for me to roll into work with at least one for each arm as I schlep photography gear back and forth between Brooklyn and Manhattan daily. When I’m not traveling between boroughs, I’m traveling between states for work, and when I’m lucky, sneaking out of the country for pleasure. While the space and weight-defying magical…

Much like I wish I were the kind of traveler who only packed one bag, I wish I were the kind of photographer who only used one camera. Instead, I always have two or three bags and two or three cameras. Despite my best intentions, I can’t seem to go on a trip with just one of each. Even if I wear the same outfit or shoot with the same camera for three days straight—both of which have been known to…

I have lost count of how many cameras and lenses have been unintentionally dropped or damaged while traveling in a foreign country. In France, a friend accidentally dropped my 35mm point-and-shoot in the English Channel. In Laos, I thought it was a good idea to take pictures in the middle of a tubing trip down the Nam Song River. In Korea, I became a regular at the Nikon service and repair center…

It was October of 2012, and I was in the middle of a 40 km trek to remote Hmong and Khmu villages outside of Luang Prabang, in Northern Laos. I was two months into a fifteen-month trip around the world that I had been dreaming of for quite some time and planning for a year prior to my departure. I spent more time debating which camera system to bring than anything else. I forwent my film cameras…

I was in the middle of Burma (Myanmar, if you prefer) when I told my travel partner that it had always been my dream to spend a year traveling around the world.
“Would you ever do that? Spend one whole year traveling?” I asked, making conversation, as one does several days into roaming around a foreign country.
“Sure,” he responded.
In that moment, unbeknownst to my travel partner, traveling…

My maternal great-grandmother’s family owned three cinemas during the Great Depression. You could say film and photography runs in my blood. Or, ran in my blood, until my grandmother’s father passed away and the ties to the cinemas were severed when they went to her brother. “The rest of the family wasn’t interested… I think there was a possible splinter, or a grudge was held,” my aunt told me.…
