Learning About Large Format Lenses
Large format lenses are used to capture images on large format negatives. Large format photography requires specialized photography skills, such as metering and lens manipulation.
Why Use Large Format Lenses?
Large format photography allows for much greater control of an image. It uses movable lenses and film planes to create optical effects and manipulate the depth of field in ways not possible with a typical SLR camera.
Another benefit of large format photography is grain reduction during image enlargement. Large format lenses project an image onto larger negatives than medium format lenses or SLR lenses. This means that the image must be magnified fewer times to be enlarged. Less magnification means a reduction in the amount of grain that exists in the final image.
Large format photography and grain reduction is great for portrait or food photographers, whose images are often significantly enlarged.
Macro Lenses
A macro lens is used to take extreme close-up photos. Macro lenses are suited to large format photography because the precision of the lens can capture the most minute details.
Wide Angle Lenses
Used primarily in landscape photography, wide angle lenses help capture a much broader image than other lenses. Wide shots can convey the scope of a landscape or cityscape more effectively. Taking landscape photographs with a large format lens requires knowledge of metering and range finding, so having a rangefinder lens with you can be a helpful tool.
