Camera trigger systems are valuable for taking photographs of fast-moving action, especially when you can't predict exactly when the events you want to photograph will occur. Triggering systems react within milliseconds, and unlike human beings, are always alert, so you won't miss the action.
A camera trigger system is any device that's capable of remotely triggering the shutter on your camera. The simplest remote triggers include manually operated shutter releases, while sophisticated versions incorporate a variety of detectors capable of responding to movement, sound, and light. Various models are available, including those with single, dedicated functions, such as for lighting detection, and others that incorporate several different sensors for more general applications.
Many photographers use camera trigger systems to capture lightning strikes. Because lightning consists of invisible infrared pulses followed by visible lighting strikes, some camera lightning triggers use the infrared light pulses, and others respond to visible lightning flashes. Some triggers have microphones that respond to loud noises such as guns going off. This type is good for capturing muzzle flashes of guns, athletes launching themselves from starting blocks, or images of objects shattering. Detectors with motion sensors are ideal for taking photos of animals walking along trails or birds feeding. Laser-sensitive light triggers release camera shutters when objects or animals break the beams from laser pencils.
Although some kits come with for specific cameras, others are generic, and you need specific camera trigger system accessories such as the right trigger cable for your camera. The same applies if you change cameras or own more than one camera. Other useful accessories include remote sensors and infrared triggers that avoid the need for a physical connection between the main trigger and remote unit.
When you need to use flash, shutter release accessories, such as remote flash triggers, make for a simpler setup without cables running around your set. Some trigger systems have a time-lapse capability that's optimal for capturing a sequence of events, such as the moon rising or a flower opening.
If you use manual film cameras, threaded cable releases offer similar capabilities. They're ideal for working with tripods and some, such as air bulb shutter releases, allow remote operation for photographing wildlife.
