Tiffen aXent overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 52mm XLE Series aXent Neutral Density 3.0 Filter is a solid ND filter with a 1000x filter factor that provides a 10-stop exposure reduction. Its 3.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

3.0 neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 10-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

    Tiffen aXent reviews

52mm XLE Series aXent Neutral Density 3.0 Filter is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best ND 3.0?.... I bught this nd as an economic alternative for an 10 stop filter, i read all the comments and reviews online all said it left a redish tint but i went with it anyway and i have to say i am pleased i have not tested the more expensive ones, but this one is a great buy. The supposed red tint did not appear on my pictures at least not so much like some people said, if you know to use white balance and shoot raw it is no problem, plus the filter is made for capturing B&W. So to sum it up i love this filter it does not get out of my camera bag and it is used constantly for b&w and colors

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great ND Filter for the Price, but not perfect First off, let me say that I couldn't be any more pleased with B&H's shipping. Fast and ahead of expectations. I bought this filter because the price is right and I wanted to simply play around with some long daytime exposures. The first shot I took was of our barn and stables at 5 in the evening. I was able to get a full 60 seconds of exposure time. While the shutter was open my youngest daughter drove by on the tractor while she was feeding the horses, and she and the tractor do not show up in the image at all. Got good cloud movement while my focus stayed sharp on the barn. That having been said, as with some other reviews, I did notice a slight red tint to the image. But I shoot RAW and it was easily compensated for in Lightroom. Overall, I'm pleased with the product and can't wait to go out shooting some more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from CAREFUL--READ INFORMATION ABOUT FILTER BEFORE BUYING Note that this filter does not filter infrared to the extent that other Tiffen ND filters such as their (more expensive) advantiX and apeX models do. All ND filters leave color casts to some extent, but the aXent may leave a more noticeable red cast in strong IR situations such as foliage in direct sunlight. White balance adjustment may not as easily compensate for this. Tiffen explains the effects on infrared light of their filters on their website, but it may not be obvious to those who don't read this information. Having said that, the aXent does the job well enough in most cases to be really useful to create ultra-long exposure shots. Tiffen recommends the filter for B&W work, but even for color photography, it can work well enough if you're careful about the situations you use it in or a Photoshop whiz. And you can't beat the price. Fun to experiment with!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent entry-level filter I bought this filter because I wanted to experiment with daytime long exposures. I didn't want to spend too much money on this kind of filter just yet. This lens is great in allowing me to take several-second-long exposures even in bright daylight. However, the glass on this filter tends to exaggerate the color balance and produces images that are too warm. But this was easily corrected post production (if you shoot RAW).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The results surprised me! Having never used a ND Filter before I have nothing to compare this to, but, I got the results I was looking for immediately. I wanted to get that smooth look with flowing water over a dam. It was 35 degrees out so I had to work fast. Only took six shots with varying speeds and f-stops and was quite please with the results of all shots.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from bad color cast This certain does the job. But, I have found it creates a horrible color cast that is hard to correct post processing. maybe good to use for black and white photography, but anything you want with good color, its a no. Its cheap, so maybe its good for a beginner to practice long exposures with.
