The ultraCage Scout HX from Redrock Micro is a portable, self-contained handheld cage and rig for mirrorless and DSLR cameras. The fully loaded Scout HX features a precision-machined cage, a removable rod system, microRemote electronics, an integrated fingerwheel, and built-in battery power.

The Scout can be configured to fit most handheld cameras, ranging from smaller mirrorless to larger DSLRs, while leaving all camera functions fully accessible. The rig's aluminum frame gives your camera added protection from bumps and scrapes, while its Rhino mount secures the torque motor for slip-free operation, and its integrated cold shoe mount enables you to mount up to two accessories.

The ultraCage Scout's wireless-ready microRemote Fingerwheel System is integrated into the cage to optimize balance and minimize size. The integrated fingerwheel offers smooth electronically controlled focus without your hands leaving the grips, and the added opposite-side handgrip provides balance for handholding shots.

The ultraCage Scout HX has setup options to adapt to different shooting styles. You can use the rig in Expanded mode, which features extended grip for comfortable and balanced handholding, or collapse the rig into Compact mode for a smaller setup designed for use on cine-style rigs, such as studio or shouldermount rigs, or on gimbals. You can also fine-tune between the two modes using four sliders for maximum size and balance adjustments.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Potential, A little flawed in execution It could be that my copy has these problems but as I have no way of knowing otherwise, I decided to put my thoughts down here. The Bad 1. My copy came with the Scout sticker missing and in it's stead an ugly empty placeholder. 2. It's such a bummer that the bottom plate is NOT an Arca Swiss compatible plate. It has the right shape but much narrower. My thinking is if you are going to be inventing a plate system to slide a camera into this, why not just make it compatible with something that's already tested and proven to be effective? 3. The buttons are very iffy. Power doesn't come on, or doesn't go off unless you jab at it several times. Eventually it does decide to come on and then... 4. The motor seems to have a lot of jitter in it. For no apparent reason it starts vibrating, every now and then. 5. I haven't yet been able to get manual calibration to work properly. Although I haven't had this for more than a couple of days. The Good 1. Automatic calibration works really well, on all my Zeiss glass. 2. Movement is super smooth. Even heavily damped lenses such as Zeiss' rotate effortlessly with the flick of a finger. 3. There is no slippage that I could notice What can improve: 1. Allow mapping to say 180 deg on the finger wheel. Often you need to rack focus that exceeds 180 deg, and it is a bit difficult to do so without adjusting your finger and shaking the camera. 2. PLEASE embrace Arca Swiss plates. For those of us who have them on all our cameras and lenses would love you for it. For those that don't, it wouldn't hurt. 3. Letting us use our RRS plates would also prevent inadvertent rotation of the camera body due to the plate being mounted on only 1 hole. 4. Which means the whole top, cross arm assembly can be removed and it would make for a much more compact and lightweight gig, that also allows assemble and disassemble that much more quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little rig Used with my GH4. The camera fit perfectly. I used a rented prime Veydra 25mm lens. That lens has built in gears witch comes in handy when using a focus motor. The wheel control is nice and smooth. For me it's the only way to shoot hand held from now on.
