The Rode NTG-2 features no on/off switch. It is recommended that you remove the batteryfrom the unit when the microphone is not in use as it is always drawing current.

Yeah it works well. There will still be some background noise but it's minimal. Just make sure to disable auto gain on the camera, or install magic lantern.

No, the RODE NTG2 Shotgun Microphone does not have a -10 dB pad, but it does have a switchable high-pass filter set at 80 Hz which can be used to remove low frequency noise that is not part of your intended source.
