Dracast Silkray 400 overview

  • 1Description

With its unique shape, CRI of 96+, power options, and full function control, the Silkray 400 Bi-Color LED Round Light from Dracast is a valuable tool in the studio or on set for a variety of specialized uses. The Silkray 400 has color temperature that's variable from 3200-5600K or anywhere in between for matching other lights, ambient lighting or just for creative color. No filters are needed; just dial it in. Brightness is variable too, from 0-100%, avoiding the need to use scrims or moving the light back and forth for the right illumination.

The Silkray's size and shape are unique factors. The diminutive 10.23" diameter disc is a little over 1/2" in thickness, and since its LEDs are barely warm to the touch, the light can be squeezed into places where traditional light sources just can't go. Add to that the fact that the Silkray 400 can be separated from its yoke, and you have a light that can almost literally go anywhere. And, since it weighs in at only 3 lb, you can gaffer tape it into position if needed. The flexible Silkray 400 also offers power options. It comes with a 100-240 VAC power adapter, ready for worldwide use, but it can also run on optional NP-F type camera batteries when mains power is unavailable.

    Dracast Silkray 400 reviews

Silkray 400 Bi-Color LED Round Light is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 104.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very interesting and useful light... great build quality. I already own several Dracast lights, all bi-color, but when I saw this one I couldn't pass up trying it. I'm glad I did. This is the first LED light I've tried that looks just like a softbox without the softbox. Very nice wrap-around light with control over the color as well. Like all my Dracasts, this thing is built incredibly well. It needs to be placed close to your subject because the light falls off rather quickly, but the look of the light is very nice. This will be a great addition to anyone's lighting kit, especially for portraits/video talking heads, etc. It is good as a subtle wash fill in a multi-light setup as well. Color temperature selector is a bit jumpy on the one I got, especially at the extreme daylight end, but moving the control very smoothly and slowly seems to overcome that a bit. I would recommend this as an addition to anyone's lighting kit and I know it will come in handy for a lot of my shoots for years to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice light for closeups. I purchased the Dracast Silkray 400 Bi_Color LED along with batteries and a light stand during a DealZone special for a very low price that was too hard to pass up. I've been wanting a quality soft fill light for closeup shots and this light delivered. The light was very soft and beautiful and cast very little shadow due to its subtle diffusion. Having the Bi-Color option is very handy since I match the color temperature of the available practical lighting and change the color balance on my cameras. This light takes the Sony L-series batteries which great since it takes the same batteries as my Sony FS100. I will purchase two more of these soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Home / Semi Pro Studio Light I own! I mounted this on top of my Sony AX100. It Now is the ONLY light I use to do podcast or documentaries... The Color comes out great and the filter allows low light sensitivity cameras (I run a parallel Skype Cam) to not be too oversaturated. You could get 2 - 3 of these and do Pro wedding photo's w proper lighting set ups. Really the best lighting I have used.... I also have other LED lighting but the individual LED's are annoying...still effective.. I like this light because you adjust the filtering by two rotating knobs and not adding additional plastic filters to the light... Highly Recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Value for price I bought this little guy to compliment my LED corporate interview kit. I was looking for a nice broad source to use as a top/back light which would be light enough to hang on a mini-boom pole which I suspend above talent. When I work in corporate environments I like to match the color temp of my lights to what is already existing on location. I can dial in whatever color temp I need very easily to match my location. It's well made and should last for years and getting it at the B&H deal price made it a real bargain. I'm happy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compact soft light without a softbox and sturdy build. I got this for $99 on Cyber Monday and I'm very happy with what I got. The light is soft, however don't expect it to be as soft as a true softbox. However, it is much softer than my Aputure HR672s. Light output is surprisingly good too (~1000 lux @ 1m). Everyone else was saying it was low, but I believe it's good for what it is. This light should not be used to fill a room, but rather as soft key for a small subject or maybe an accent light. The build is also rock solid aluminum. The build quality is also better than my Aputure lights which are plastic. The light is also light and can be battery powered. I love being able to pick it up and run around to place it wherever I want. My only complaints are that they don't charge Sony FP batteries when plugged in like my Aputures. Also the bi-color dial has a delayed response.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not very practical This light is advertised as Brightness is variable too, from 0-100% - No it isn't - it only dims down to about 50% before it turns off. Also, because of this, variable from 3200-5600K or anywhere in between - it is not - since the led's only dim to about 50%, there are color temperatures near 3200 and 5600 that are not there (for example 3400). The yoke (while very stylish) is totally impractical. Tilt the panel down 45?? (like maybe for table top use) and a quarter of the light is blocked by the yoke since it pivots in the center of the panel - who designed this - certainly not someone who had to use it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Light Fixture I just installed three of these lights for my kid's elementary school TV Studio to enhance their morning video announcements show. They have a good quality build, nice long power cords, and the color/dimming adjustments are nice. I may get some for myself and use the battery power option. In a small space they provide a soft pleasing diffused light. They don't throw the light very far, which I wish they did, but it's something I can live with on interviews - far less stuff to fuss with to get good soft lighting than older fixtures. Only loses 1 star due to having a short throw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light for portraits and small products - and more Really nice soft light for portraits, small products, special fills, soft rim light, etc. I really prefer soft natural lighting rather that harsh shadows and intense direct light. This light has a really nice character to it without having to mess with a softbox or other diffuser. You can set up quick and get the shot. I use it largely for video, and see no strobing or flicker under many different conditions. It's bi-color, so you can dial in daylight, tungsten or anything in between. Tradeoff to the bi-color: not super bright. But, it does its job well for a lot of uses. And, it can be placed close to subject and still provide plenty of softened, wraparound light. Also, comes off the bracket to be placed in some really tight places which is really handy.
