Dracast Silkray 400 Overview

  • 1Description

The Silkray 400 Bi-Color LED Panel Light from Dracast is a 11.8 x 8.3 x 0.6" aluminum-framed fixture that weighs 3.0 lb and features 5600K daylight-balanced color temperature to match other fixtures or ambient light conditions. Brightness is adjustable from 0-100% with the dimming level displayed on the panel's digital readout. The Silkray's 168 LEDs have a high CRI of 96+ for color accuracy and they draw 40W while outputting many times that number in tungsten fixture equivalence for a rapid return on your investment. Running barely warm to the touch, you can bring the light very close to the talent without discomfort and danger, and, at only a little over 1/2" thick, it can be placed in tight situations where legacy fixtures just can't go.

The Silkray 400 ships with a 100-240 VAC power adapter for worldwide use, but it can also run on NP-F batteries thanks to the battery plate on the back of the fixture. A carry bag is also included.

    Dracast Silkray 400 Reviews

Silkray 400 Daylight LED Panel Light is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Useless on battery power Unfortunately, there aren't all that many options for affordable daylight-only LED panels. ?I'm disappointed to report that the Dracast Silkray 400 isn't a good one, unless you want to be tethered to an outlet at all times. Their light quality is decent; it's less green than the cheaper Neewer bi-color panels I have when those are set to daylight-only. Surprisingly, however, these aren't all that much brighter. With bi-color panels using only half their LEDs at a given time, I would expect these dedicated daylight units to clearly overpower them (when the panel size is similar), but they don't. You also can't remove the diffusion from these lights to increase their output, the way you can with many others. But the real defect here lies in the battery-power option. Unlike other (and cheaper) panels, these lights don't go off when the battery power starts to drop. They gradually fade out, meaning that they can't be trusted on set. You have no idea minute to minute what your light output is, and in two uses I've had two significantly compromised results because of this defect. There's a digital display on the back of these lights next to the dimmer dial, which shows percentage of power; it shows full power right up until the lights fade away to nothing. So you can't even attempt to work around this problem by monitoring this display. This is bafflingly defective engineering. No other production equipment I use behaves this way. My audio recorder doesn't just start dropping samples when the batteries are low. My camera doesn't just start dropping frames when its battery is low. The behavior of these lights is simply unacceptable for production gear. I will give Draco credit for responding to E-mail with messages the show they actually read what you write. They acknowledge this problem but say there's nothing they can do about it. Because I discovered it a few days after the return period, I'm stuck with $350 lights I can't trust for anything. B&H has also been surprisingly uncooperative, not even allowing an exchange. Not what I'm used to from their formerly stellar service. Yes, there must be rules, but this is a defective item where the vendor is throwing its hands up and saying "well, we can't do anything." And I'm not even asking for a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works fine for slide copying I bought this to provide a backlight source for copying slides using a camera. The panel provides a spatially-uniform light of daylight color temperature with adjustable intensity. I mount it on a light stand in front of the camera. Ive also used the panel for supplementary lighting in my photography. The only problem I had was mounting the panel on my 3/8 light stand, as the panel sleeve is 5/8. I rigged an adapter to do the job.

What does the 4000 lux rating mean? Is that at 1 foot or 1 meter... ?
    Asked by: Ty
That Lux rating is for 1 meter. // Also, if there are any other technical or product related questions, feel free to contact us directly at any time at support@dracobroadcast.com.

Not enough info in the description. What is the beam angle? And you should include the distance for the lux rating
    Asked by: Steve
These are technical questions, which I am not able to answer. Suffice to say that my light, the round version, is a very well built, and reliable, portable lightweight light. The smaller, frankly not as well finished, Ikan PIatto lights put out more power per square inch and their light is sweeter . As with the bokeh on my 90mm Summicron, it has to be experienced.
