Tiffen 77HTCGND6 overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 77mm Graduated 0.6 ND Digital HT Filter is a graduated neutral density filter that helps to specifically darken skies and other bright areas of the image. The filter is densest at the edge and tapers to clear by the middle, with a feathered line between the density and clear areas. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and the 0.6 density provides a 2 stop reduction in light from entering the lens. This filter also features a rotating filter ring for flexibility when placing the density over specific areas of the scene.

The Digital HT coating is a high transmission multi-coating that surpasses military specifications for hardness and durability. This optical purity combined with high scratch-resistance results in an easy-to-clean filter with superb imaging quality. They also feature low-profile titanium filter rings for increased strength and vignetting reduction.

0.6 ND graduated filter for darkening skies and other bright areas of the image.
Feathered edge is neither soft nor hard, providing a natural-appearing taper between the density and clear areas of the filter.
Neutral density filters do not affect the overall coloration of the image.
Rotating filter ring allows more control over placement of density in the image.
Digital HT multi-coating provides increased strength, durability, and optical clarity for greater light transmission and protection against scratches.
Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings.

    Tiffen 77HTCGND6 reviews

77mm Graduated 0.6 ND Digital HT Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 60.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality product Nice quality filter. The 0.6 seems just about right, but I'd like to compare it to a 0.9 to see if that would be too much. Waiting for the snow to melt here, as it's a bit pointless to use when both the sky and the ground are equally bright. The transition seems just a bit too soft - would like a bit more hardness to it, or would like to see the shaded area have more density closer to the transition, rather than fade in over that half of the glass. The coating is nice, really cuts glare, but is very easy to smudge. It's a bit of a pain to clean especially with those Zeiss pre-moistened lens cloths - seems they just make endless streaks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Useful Circular ND Grad Filter For the right high contrast landscape image, i.e. sunset/sunrise, this screw-on circular ND Grad filter is excellent. It provides detail in a very bright sky, and smoothly transitions between the sky and properly exposed foreground. The filter is well constructed with high quality glass and coatings. I have used 4 x 4 resin filters with Cokin and Lee holders and find this circular filter much easier to use. You may need to crop your image very slightly to get the horizon line exact, but it is so much easier than fussing with filter holders and resin filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun, fun, fun Now it's so much fun to shoot into the sun light, blocking the top half with this graduated filter. More natural looking than shooting HDR. Because it's multi-coated, it's harder to clean but I've been using an alcohol swab and microfiber with no problem. Sturdy and comes with a nice case. I use it mostly with my Nikon D90 with 18-200 DX lens and a step-up ring. When I use it on my 11-16 mm Tokina wide angle lens without step-up ring, I can see the ring at 4 corners at 11 mm, but I can fix it with vignette correction.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Investment Overall, this was a good investment; the filter does help to balance the sky IF you're not aiming the camera directly towards the sun. I've been taking pictures of landscape scenes with clouds during the daytime and the filter helps to bring down the brightness in the clouds. However, I did try the filter for a sunrise, and saw very little effect. I like, however, that you can rotate the filter to adjust the grad line and I also like how neutral the graduation is...you can't even tell there is a graduated line on it! I will, however, need to invest in a few other stops of GND's to improve my arsenal. Overall I'd say this filter works when there are clouds in the sky and the sun is not shining directly towards you, other than that there is little effect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality Round Filter This is a standard 2-stop graduated neutral density filter. I bought this one because two of my main lenses are 77 mm, so I figured I would save some money by buying one graduated ND filter rather than a square set. But I wish I'd bought the square set! While there's nothing wrong with this filter, after traveling, I would have preferred to have one of the Cokin or Lee multiple-stop sets. I also would like to be able to adjust where the darker part begins without having to reposition the whole camera on the tripod. If I had the square set, I could have just moved the filter itself up or down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter I have been using this filter nonstop. It's been great for landscape shots. I was using it all over the Badlands National Park in SD. I love the color it adds to a midday sun while leaving plenty of detail in the shadows of the cavernous landscapes. The little black slip case it comes with is great too. If you have two screw-on filters that are the same size, you can fit both in it. I bought the 77mm knowing I will upgrade to more professional lenses, but I didn't realize I would get the full effect on my current lenses that have a smaller front element. It still looks great though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Delivers The Goods The 77mm Graduated 0.6 ND Digital HT Filter by Tiffen is a well-designed and well-constructed product with excellent performance. The 2-stop gradation in the density nicely balanced the dynamic range in my landscape photos, as it does for many other photographers. This filter has the so-called soft edge between the neutral density and the clear half, which works well for my purposes, although I'm sure there are other photographers out there who prefer a hard edge for their work. The filter itself is packaged in a protective cloth enclosed in a compact and lightweight storage pouch, which is nice addition by Tiffen. The silver/gray rings of the filter rotate effortlessly and quietly. No issues there. The multi-coating gives a strong performance. The glass is exquisitely weather resistant and impact resistant. I trekked with this Tiffen filter for 2 weeks in the rugged terrain of Iceland, dropping it twice (on rock and black sand) and shooting in gales, drizzle, and sleet, and it did not sustain a scratch, separation of the rotating rings, or allow water spots to appear in the final images. That's outstanding performance. Flare is non-existent, especially if you're combining it with a good multi-coated polarizer filter. The quality of light transmission with and without a stacked polarizer was equally superb no degradation in image quality whatsoever. If there is ever such a thing as weather sealing with any type of screw-in filter, this Tiffen filters delivers. Shooting in subzero temperatures and subsequently returning to warmer indoor temps, I noticed no condensation on the inner face of the glass. I did note that sand/dirt did find its way in between the opposing rotating rings, apparent by the sound of grinding particles during rotation. The only improvement I can suggest to this product is to tighten the spacing between the rings. I won't ding the product over this, however, as I understand all too well that sand/dirt/grit has a way of finding its way into a lot of gear if you trek it through the stringent conditions I just did. All in all, the 77mm Graduated 0.6 ND Digital HT Filter by Tiffen is an excellent product that delivers the goods and is worth every penny. I strongly recommend it as standard issue gear for landscape photography.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does its job Graded filter works well - darkens the sky to allow for better overall exposure. The filter itself is rotatable much as a polarizing filter is; the gradient is gradual across the middle and is not very apparent through the lens and I found myself looking at the filter itself to make sure it was in the proper position for the best photos. Worked well. Corners were cut at wide angle (14 mm on a 4/3 lens) if this was stacked on a second filter (like a UV protective filter).
