The Hoya 77mm HRT Circular-Polarizer UV Filter is designed to block ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight while also helping to eliminate reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A filter with polarizing capability arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is non-coated and offers approximately 98% average light transmission due to its High-Rate Transparency polarizing film. It is constructed from optical glass and precision milled aluminum frames.

Blocks UV light and reduces bluish cast of daylight.
Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Non-coated.
High-Rate Transparency polarizing film helps provide approximately 98% average light transmission.
2.5 to 2.8x filter factor reduces exposure by 1.3 to 1.5 stops.
Constructed from optical glass and precision milled aluminum frames.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

77mm HRT Circular-Polarizer UV Filter is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good filter choice I purchased for my Canon 24-70mm f2.8L v1 USM lens and like it better than other CLR Polarizing Filters I've used. Seems to me the HRT works as advertised to allow greater light transmission. It is also lightweight and has a slim profile. One feature I like better than others I have used, is that relatively small movements of the filter ring cover the entire range of adjustments of the filter, I don't find myself spinning it to find the desired setting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best; don't buy any other CPL! I could tell just by picking it up that this filter was quality. The glass is PERFECT and I have not seen a single error in any of my shots. I'm currently using it with a canon 24-105 L and the lens is just as sharp with it as it is without. No auto focus issues whatsoever. Additionally, the HRT and UV coating allow for more light to pass through the filter than other CPL's. Definitely a MUST BUY!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not great but good for the price used this on a recent trip to germany. used a canon 5d miii and a canon 70-200mm 2.8 and a canon 24-105 f4 both with the 77mm thread. It's a decent piece of glass for the money but I did have trouble with it in some conditions. perfect skies with perfect clouds looked great, but once the skies got a little more overcast i couldn't get it to do anything for me. the colors did get richer but nothing i couldn't do with the saturation levels on the camera. i think it's fine if you're on a budget, but if you're a serious photographer just spend the money on the better quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good filter I use it with Canon 24-105/f4L. It is easy to screw on and can use the lense cover on its front. It allows more light to enter but the polarizing effect is not so obvious to me when I rotate the filter. Sometimes I rotate to the right position and sometimes it is very hard. The saturation effect is not clear to me either. Other than that it can improve the image quality sometimes and there is no vignettes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter! I shoot nature and water, with great results.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from un-natural looking dark center area Not sure if it was just me using this HRT filter at wrong situations. I found out when using it at lower light situations, the center of the photo, when shooting 90 degrees perpenticular to the Sun, will be MUCH darker when shooting against blue skies. No sure if all Polarizing Filter will be like this or just this particular HRT model.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Canon AF will not function with this filter on your lens The Hoya 77MM HRT Circular-Polarizer filter functions well and fit the lens on my Canon EOS 5D MkII. And produces beautiful polarized shots when I shoot landscape or cloud photography. Unfortunately, I was not aware that this lens, (for whatever reason) will not permit the Canon ultrasonic Autofocus system to function. As a consequence, I am considering returning this item and buying a genuine Canon lens of the same type, which I'm given to believe will permit AF to operate properly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It works It works and is not nearly as dark as most circular polirizarers but the effect is less dramatic.
