The Hoya 82mm HRT Circular-Polarizer UV Filter is designed to block ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight while also helping to eliminate reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A filter with polarizing capability arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is non-coated and offers approximately 98% average light transmission due to its High-Rate Transparency polarizing film. It is constructed from optical glass and precision milled aluminum frames.

Blocks UV light and reduces bluish cast of daylight.
Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Non-coated.
High-Rate Transparency polarizing film helps provide approximately 98% average light transmission.
2.5 to 2.8x filter factor reduces exposure by 1.3 to 1.5 stops.
Constructed from optical glass and precision milled aluminum frames.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better glass makes a difference We are a professional wedding and event photography company. For years we have been using mid-priced (mid-grade) glass, and were happy with the results. Until, that is, we put one of these on our lenses. Wow, there is a world of difference, depth, and clarity awaiting anyone with Hoya glass on their lens!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not good. May have been a fluke Constructed well, seemed solid, ring felt good. The problem was with the actual optics of it. I shoot architectural photography and bought this for a recent shoot. It was atrocious. It was optically very clear, but the actual degree to which it polarized was non existent. Is suspect he polarizing layer in the glass may be defective. It also created horrible flares and ghosting with any light source present. I ended up returning it to B&H who has amazing customer service. I will probably just man up and spend the 2-300 for a solid B+W or Zeiss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fit, color and price I had UV filters for my lens but decided to spend a bit more money to get Polarizing Filters ...went searching and found the Hoya HRT filters ...they are good quality for the money...doesn't feel cheap in quality and has great fit for my Nikon and Sigma Lens ...the standard 52/58mm filters are great prices but since Sigma lens has huge thread (in the 80mm range) the price gets expensive ...but for spending $ for any single lens...buying quality filters for protection and color is a no brainerI went to big bear to take pictures of my family and changed between the UV filters and these Polarizers and I can tell the colors stands out a lot more in the snow ....I would recommend anybody who buy these filtersI ended up buying the filters for all my lens...I don't like to unscrew the filters when I change lens ...it cost a bit more money but does save wear and tear on the filter, plus time to change the lenses
