Linhof Technikardan 45s Overview

  • 1Description

As the name implies, the Technikardan combines the compactness of the classic Linhof Technika drop-bed cameras with the versatility of the Kardan monorail series. The Linhof Technikardan 45s features full format flexibility, from the standard roll film sizes up to 4x5" cut film, including the remarkable 6x12cm wide-field images and all the appropriate Polaroid film formats. Its wide-angle lens capabilities allow the use of lenses 55mm and longer without recessed lensboards. The goal of its designers was to have studio camera features in a field camera size with interchangeable bellows, center swings and tilts with zero click stops, triple extension monorail, and precision-machined dovetail fittings for all movements which are positively secured with color-coded locks for smooth, rapid operation.

Front and rear standards rotate 90 degrees, parallel to the rail, making the camera flat and more compact for easy transport.
Shutter functions can be controlled behind the camera with optional Prontor TK lenses
Accepts standard Technika 45 style lensboards
Snap-on Kardan 45 back w/ grid groundglass
Fully compatible with complete Linhof system
The most compact of all 4x5 monorail cameras

    Linhof Technikardan 45s Reviews

    4x5 Technikardan 45s Camera is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4x5 Technikardan 45 I use this camera for landscape and still life photography. I travel with it. Folded with 5 lenses and all necessary accesories everything fits in a small back pack. It took a few weeks to work my way around the movements and quickest way to fold it down. But once you are familiar with how it works it is a dream. I have had the camera for ten years and have had nothing fail. Perfect for what I do. I wish the wide angle bellows were stiffer and I have to take care of picture frame edges with 135mm lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A pro workhorse for a reason... You may read negative opinions of this camera on various online forums, but this camera has been a workhorse for many pro architectural photographers for a while, and with good reason. I do documentary photography in mostly urban areas, so I needed a camera that was portable enough to travel with but offered good movements, like ample front rise and fall. I tried a metal folding field camera, and it didn't offer the movement I needed. And a studio monorail would just be too big. The TK45S more than fits my needs. It's almost as compact as a folding field camera, and offers the movements and flexibility of a monorail. For some shooters who use a folder in the field and a monorail in the studio, this camera could take the place of both. The camera sets up relatively fast. Despite what you may read online it's easy to set up and break down, and it's quite sturdy. Combine all of that with the typical quality engineering and manufacturing of a German camera, and you have a first-rate system camera. The only real downside is the price of the camera and accessories, but you get what you pay for.
