Moog Announces New Labyrinth Parallel Generative Analog Synthesizer

Moog is diving deep into parallel generative synthesis with the dual-voice Labyrinth, a unique semi-modular 60HP synthesizer with two distinct sequencers and voice processing paths that help provide an incredible source of creative inspiration. It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly a decade since Moog Music first introduced the Mother-32 in 2015, the company’s first foray into semi-modular, Eurorack-friendly synthesis. Since then, Moog has continued to add to its “Mother” line of synths with entries like the DFAM (Drummer from Another Mother) drum machine and the Subharmonicon and now finally, the Labyrinth.

The Labyrinth consists of two generative sequencers that bring sounds to life that bloom over time, giving users full control over their evolution and scale, then play off each other for striking polymetric melodies.

Both signal paths are completely analog, and they shine when adding color to the often-static backdrops of drum patterns or basslines. Equally capable of standing on its own or adding depth to your existing rack setup, the Labyrinth is a welcome tool for live sets and home studio work.

The dual sequencers use chance operations to construct two unique eight-step paths that twist and curve around each other to form a hypnotic path of sound. Thanks to the comprehensive integrated patch bay, you can synth the Labyrinth via analog clock or MIDI while processing.

You can also integrate the Labyrinth into your synth setup in interesting ways, such as tuning it to your other instruments to improvise in the same key while you play your Moog Matriarch or Grandmother. Patch together the Labyrinth and Spectravox for animated spectral movement. Or combine Labyrinth and Mavis in a 104HP rack for extensive modularity. The possibilities are nearly endless.

And for the synth heads out there looking for the technical nitty-gritty, the Labyrinth features the high-quality analog synthesis circuitry you’ve come to expect from Moog. Labyrinth sports a fresh approach to the classic Moog synth sound, with a smooth West Coast-style voltage-controlled wavefolder. The two VCOs can drive duophonic melodic counterpoints, metallic FM tones, and analog synth drums.

The state-variable voltage-controlled filters morph between low-pass and band-pass responses, allowing you to experiment with smooth command over complex tonal shapes. A parallel voice processing path with voltage-controlled blending allows you to morph sounds over time. And with a comprehensive patch bay, you can integrate with a wide variety of other modules in your set up.

The Labyrinth ships with the usual essentials, including a power supply, five 12” patch cables, and patch sheet overlays for easy recall.
