The New RODE NT1 Condenser Microphone

RØDE has recently announced a new offering to their line of large diaphragm condenser microphones, the NT1. This microphone features a 1” gold-sputtered HF6 pressure gradient condenser capsule with a cardioid polar pickup pattern. What’s unique about the NT1 is that RØDE partnered with Rycote, creators of the patented Lyre shockmount technology, to build an internal capsule suspension that isolates and reduces unwanted vibration from entering the capsule. External shockmounts are a common and necessary component for reducing noise while recording. Having an internal shockmount doesn’t replace the usefulness of an external shockmount, but should serve to further isolate the capsule.

Using high-grade components, gold-plated XLR connectors, and a transformerless design, the engineers at RØDE manufacture the NT1 microphone circuit at their facility in Australia. The design, build, and quality-control standards give the microphone an internal self-noise of only 4.5 dBA, the quietest of any RØDE microphone to date.

For durability, the aluminum body of the microphone enclosure is electro-plated with nickel, to reduce the effects of corrosion over time. The microphone body is then electrostatically coated and baked with a ceramic finish comparable to that used on firearms, to prevent scratches and dents. The graphics, such as the RØDE name and microphone setting labels, are then laser-etched onto the body to complete the finish.

To complement the NT1, RØDE has partnered with Rycote to build a Dual Lyre suspension system. This system uses a smaller inner lyre within the shockmount to maintain tension and the neutral position of the other lyres. RØDE is also releasing the SMR pop shield. Using medical-grade stainless steel, the engineers chemically etch, shape, and weld the shield before applying a PVD base coat and electrostatically applied paint finish. Between the two outer layers of the shield is a layer of silicone, designed to dampen internal resonance.

The microphone includes a 10-year warranty (with online registration) and comes with the RM2 stand mount, or as part of a complete package that also includes the Rycote SMR shockmount and SMR pop shield.

Thanks to this "InDepth" article, as well as B&H, I ended up grabbing one of these microphones for my home studio. It was easily one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has a wonderful, classic sound that is warm and realistic. It makes my voice sound clear and robust without colouring or distorting it beyond reality.

Definitely a fantastic microphone that is worth every penny!
