Tiffen Circular Polarizer Overview

Tiffen 86mm Circular Polarizer Filters - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Can dramatically enhance a blue sky and make the clouds more prominent
Used best at right angle to the sun
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

I like this polarizing filter! I used it for my Olympus Pen F. The rotating aspect, which adjusts for reflection, is really nice and works well.

question

Will this fit a Sony Pl lens? specifically for the 35, 50, 85mm PL lens for the Sony PMW-F3. I have researched and hand measured and am still unsure which size is appropriate. any help is greatly appreciated!
Asked by: Anonymous
The Sony Cine-Alta lenses do have a filter mounting screw. It is M 95mm, pitch 1.0 mm. (One note: this excludes the 20mm lens.) In other words, they take a 95mm filter and this 86mm will not fit them.

question

Can I use this filter on Sony HX300? Is it threaded?
Asked by: Norm R.
Assume you mean Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 Digital Camera You camera has a Filter Thread55mm and will readily accept a 55mm filter. The filter is threaded. For shots with glare or blue sky, I will rotate the filter until sky darkens or until the glare disappears. I.e., reflections from surface of water, a storefront window, or other shiny/reflective surface. During autofocus my lens barrel rotates, so the filter must be adjusted manually only after focus is complete. Also, many times I ignore the filter. However, It is left on the lens at all times. Since filters can be stacked , another 55mm filter can be threaded onto the polarizer, if needed. I choose to locate the polarized lens last, with any other filters prior to the polarizer.

Asked by: Ethan
Somewhere on your lens there should be a circle with a slash through it followed by two digits and “mm”. This is the size in millimeters of the end of the lens that accepts filters, etc.

there is a flat hard plastic case to store the filter in. I usually bring 2-3 filters each in a case and put them all in my backpack.
