Tiffen 52CP Overview

Tiffen 52mm Circular Polarizer Filters - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Can dramatically enhance a blue sky and make the clouds more prominent
Used best at right angle to the sun
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

Tiffen 52CP Reviews

Great function, low profile

Works great and very low profile when mounted on a lens. I love that I can use a lens cover without having to remove it (and the lens cover actually fits BETTER with this installed). When turning it the filter feels kind of gritty, like there is some particulate stuck inside of it. This is mildly disconcerting but doesn't alter the functionality at all.

I have both Nikon and Pentax cameras. A total of 8 lens between the two brands. I have always purchased Tiffen because of the price / value. Why pay more for a quality product that gets the job done.

Looks when as long as the filter stays on the lens

I love the look, but it doesn't seem to lock in place with my lens and keeps spinning. So it fits loose and one point from me moving around the filter almost fell off. While shooting I also didn't notice that it would slowly creep up and mess up the 4 corners of the picture. I didn't notice it until I brought it into my PC. i can live it since I'm now aware of it for next time. I included few images that you can see what i mean.

Used/damaged product was delivered.

Dust and fingerprints on my brand-new filter straight out of the package. Considerable amount of oil/grease oozing out of the sides of the filter all along the edge. Tried wiping it off, keeps coming out when twisted or pressure added. Will not trust this, the oil will drip and get all over the lens and threads. I work two jobs and don't have time to find packaging and mail it out to return it, not worth the hassle. Just disappointed that in the last few months 2/2 packages purchased from B&H came either damaged or in this case damaged and used (and unusable due to the significant amount of oil/grease dripping out of it). When I buy a new item, I expect to receive it that way. If I wanted used, I would have gone to a thrift store. No seal on the filter case, and it appears to have been cracked by someone when they first opened it. Very blatantly a returned/damaged item.

Solid polarizer

Good affordable middle ground polarizer. I find cheap polas to have some gnarly color shifts... This one has minimal color shift, and is a very functional polarizer. I'll continue to buy Tiffen polas for their good cost-quality balance.

I bought this filter to use with a SmallRig cage for the iPhone 13 Pro Max and a Moondog filter adapter with a 52mm thread. It all worked like a charm.

Excellent filter for the Grand Canyon

I purchased two Tiffen circular polarizing filters, a 52mm and a 67mm for a trip to the Grand Canyon. They both performed well and I was able to minimize the haze that is common in the canyon. I have always had sucess with Tiffen filters and these were no exception.

Somewhere on your lens there should be a circle with a slash through it followed by two digits and “mm”. This is the size in millimeters of the end of the lens that accepts filters, etc.

question

What is the possibility of vignetting with this lens if I use a 18-55 or 18-200 mm lens?
Asked by: Harvey
When these lenses are used on cropped sensor cameras, there should not be any vignetting. If this filter is attached on top of a UV filter, then there may be some vignetting at 18 mm.

Yes, circular polarizers will work just fine in your camera. They will not interfere with the sensor for autofocus. Enjoy the craft!

question

I notice this filter is not multi coated. I would be using this on the water. Does multi coating make a difference?
Asked by: Harvey
You'll want a good multi coated filter in the long run. Anytime you shoot into the light you can get flare or loss of contrast without multi coating.
