Tiffen 46CP overview

Tiffen 46mm Circular Polarizer Filters - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.

Note: Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras (They will also work on manual systems without problems)

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Can dramatically enhance a blue sky and make the clouds more prominent
Used best at right angle to the sun
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

    Tiffen 46CP reviews

46mm Circular Polarizing Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Downright decent. I use this on a Pansonic Lumix GF1. It was inexpensive and works just like it expected it would. Polarizers make such a difference in color saturation and reducing contrast when outside. I always have it on the lens unless I am indoors. It seems that the rings are a bit thick, but it hasn't been a problem for me as I only have a 20mm (40mm in full frame equivalent) lens for the camera. If I had a superwide lens, it might be a problem. Some other reviewers noted it is not multicoated, but I haven't had a problem with that aspect yet. A good piece of equipment for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential to my shooting Regardless of which size camera I use, the circular polariser is essential. Working alot around water and sun, and given the drawbacks of digital in these environments, the circular polariser allows me the opportunity to create the image I want in the camera, with minimal time in post production. This 46mm filter is for my run-around camera and is of acceptable quality for this device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Consistant quality. Great product. Use for landscape shots to emphasize clouds and sky and to improve color. Perfect fit and can be used with retracting lens in the new advanced point and shoot cameras without having to remove.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thickness measurement is wrong The 5mm thickness specification must be for the glass. It adds about 0.25 in to the end of your camera. Also, plan on getting a case or holder for the filter. There is no pouch or disk case. It comes in an oversized, rectangular plastic case. As a polarizer, it is fine. The spin action is good and you can move it with a modest push by a single finger.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well An average quality CP filter but it gets the job done for occasional use. Also, it is dark enough that it serves as an ND filter allowing me to stay in the sweet spot of my Micro Four Thirds lenses. It's a little thick, so be careful with wide lenses. I'm seeing just a hint of (extra) vignetting on my Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 pancake lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from simple essential If you are concerned about picture quality and reducing glare... this is a rather inexpensive must again. We bought this with a haze/UV protector filter and the picture quality is profoundly improved. Anywhere there is reflection, I'd recommend this (inside light off windows, light off water, wet roads, windshields...
