Tiffen Circular Polarizer Overview

Tiffen 58mm Circular Polarizer Filters - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Can dramatically enhance a blue sky and make the clouds more prominent
Used best at right angle to the sun
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

Gets rid of those specular highlights and helps saturate images. Disclaimer: I have only used it with film.

Circular polarizer

Wish I would have bought a more expensive one. Previous experience with a circular polarizer I could see a difference as the lens rotated. This one there is no difference when rotated. At least it is protecting my main lens.

I got this lens for reducing glare off items in my photos to produce photogrammetry models. I see a reduction in overall brightness, but I'm not seeing a huge improvement in glare/reflection reduction. For reference, I'm using this with a Canon T7 and have tried with several different consumer-grade lenses.

question

Whats the difference of this circular polarizing on the linear? Is circular polarizing works on auto-focus SLR cameras, because I have read about that they are not recommended for auto-focus SLR cameras. How true?
Asked by: Anonymous
Circular Polarizer are designed for autofocus cameras. Most lenses cannot autofocus with a linear polarizer. If you want to use an autofocus lens you should choose a circular polarizer.

hello how many lens elements are housed in a standard 58MM filter of this type

Circular Polarizers and polarizers in general are composed of two flat pieces of glass (as opposed to elements which are convex/concave optics used in a lens).

question

Can I use this filter on Sony HX300? Is it threaded?
Asked by: Norm R.
Assume you mean Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 Digital Camera You camera has a Filter Thread55mm and will readily accept a 55mm filter. The filter is threaded. For shots with glare or blue sky, I will rotate the filter until sky darkens or until the glare disappears. I.e., reflections from surface of water, a storefront window, or other shiny/reflective surface. During autofocus my lens barrel rotates, so the filter must be adjusted manually only after focus is complete. Also, many times I ignore the filter. However, It is left on the lens at all times. Since filters can be stacked , another 55mm filter can be threaded onto the polarizer, if needed. I choose to locate the polarized lens last, with any other filters prior to the polarizer.

Will this work for a Nikkor ais 24mm f2.8 lens?
Asked by: Ethan
Somewhere on your lens there should be a circle with a slash through it followed by two digits and “mm”. This is the size in millimeters of the end of the lens that accepts filters, etc.
