Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber Tripod

The Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber Tripod is a 3-section support that replaces the 055CXPRO3 tripod. It has a load capacity of 19.8 lb and extends from 3.5" to 66.9". Its carbon fiber legs are secured by the Quick Power Locks. These updated flip locks increase the tripod's rigidity by 50% compared to its predecessor.

A redesigned center column has a "one finger" operation, and includes an Easy Link 3/8"-16 attachment for attaching accessories such as an LED light or a reflector via a compatible arm. The center column can be positioned horizontally, allowing for low-angle and macro photography. The upper disc where a tripod head is mounted has been redesigned as well, and now has a bull's eye bubble level that rotates 360° so you can locate it where you can see it. This allows you to level your camera on both the horizontal and vertical planes.

Why Have One When You Can Have Two?

This is a really excellent tripod. I actually just bought a second one because I liked the first one so much. Well built, robust, and durable. The carbon fiber keeps it light, of course, but it is not particularly small, especially once you get a decent head on top (I use a fairly large, somewhat heavy geared head). With a modest head you could go hiking with it, but I treat this as a professional tripod for composite, landscape, and architecture photography. It is very sturdy, and I think well worth the money before getting into seriously expensive ultra-professional tripods. Also, the pivoting riser/arm allows you to drop the tripod nearly flat so your camera can be positioned just above ground level.

Great Tripod

Metal Fatigue and that was that.

For some time this served me well but the metal collar that the leg is seated in had a piece break off suddenly and there is no real way to repair it because it's a spot that the angle stop braces against on the inside of the leg. And so, after about 5 years it has just plain died. I've had similar problems with longevity with my Manfrotto heads and have moved on to another brand. Hopefully I'll have more luck with my new Gitzo.

I had two of these and they both broke in about 18 months. In each case, the leg just pulled out of the upper piece when extending it. The plastic around the rim of the lower part splintered, and I haven't been able to repair it (currently held together with gorilla tape for real estate shoots but it's not very adjustable for anything else). To be fair, I've extended and closed the legs probably 200+ times in that 18 months, but I don't feel like it should splinter like that (especially for a fairly expensive tripod). Going to NY next week - I'll look for something sturdier at B&H when I'm there.

Tripod legs are very sturdy and secure. I feel comfortable putting my Komodo rig on it and it is very lightweightL. What took so long for me to upgrade to carbon fiber I have no idea.

I have a L bracket (Arca Swiss), will this fit the PL-200 or will I need a different L bracket?

This head is only compatible with Manfrotto type plates. You would have to get an Arca Swiss compatible ball head. You can click the link below to view; https://bhpho.to/2RLwy35

I need a good tutorial on how to tighten the legs. This is my second tripod where the legs become loose over time. Can someone direct me to a tutorial?
Asked by: Raquel
Although there isn't a tutorial on this topic, Manfrotto suggests that 3 turns on the screw that secures the leg locks with the provided tool would suffice.

It's a combination of metal and plastic. The lock collar is metal and the lever is plastic.

question

I have the optional Manfrotto 555B center column with adjustable half ball. I am able to remove the bottom adjustment knob so as to have a smooth bottom end of the center column. I know the new MT055CXPRO3 tripod legs has a single button feature to release the legs. Would I still be able to use my center column with these tripod legs? Even if I have to remove the adjustment knob to install it and them reinstall the knob again is ok with me. Even if it means I cannot use the one button feature. Thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
The Manfrotto 555B center column with adjustable half ball will not work with that tripod. It works with these tripods, http://bhpho.to/1mruPHW

Can l turn the center column of this tripod upside-down? (If not which model allows me to do it?)
Asked by: Sergio
No you cant turn the center column upside-down. to get closer to the ground you can move the center column right up and turn it to 90 degrees and splay the legs to their widest point.

Are the carbon fiber legs more rigid than the aluminum? I ask bc I have the mt055pro3 aluminum but I think one of the sections bent slightly so getting it open and closed is a real hassle. Also, is there any concern with the carbon fiber breaking in cold weather?
Asked by: James
Actually cold weather is a reason to get a carbon fiber tripod; if you compare to the aluminum version you'll see a grip on one of the legs to be able to handle it, especially with bare hands. Carbon fiber is more rigid than metal and better for absorbing impact and vibrations.
