The Hoya 67mm R72 Infrared Filter is a specialized filter used for infrared photography with digital cameras and specialized infrared film. This nearly opaque filter blocks all visible light up to 720nm, enabling recording of subject matter and scenes that are not visible under normal conditions. Due to the nature of infrared photography, the filter factor for this filter is highly variable and depends largely on the ISO sensitivity in use and lighting conditions.

question
How many stops does this filter add to the exposure time?
An R72 filter will block about 7 stops of light but it will vary depending on the time of day, time of year and the anti aliasing filter that is built into your camera. Different times of the day and year have different amounts of IR light which will affect your exposure times. So you will need to experiment.

question
I recently purchased a Nikon D7100. What kind of results, if any, can I expect if I put one of these filters on it?
I wouldn't say it gives you true infrared capability, but it does give interesting effects. I find the results look best after conversion to B&W. In my experience it blocks as much as 10 stops of light so is only usable with a tripod.

question
Can you use this if your camera's internal sensor has already had an IR conversion?
If a camera has had the IR cut filter removed, it is still sensitive to visible light, so the R72 filter will block blue and green light from getting to the sensor. Yes, the R72 filter will be necessary for the camera to see infrared light only.

question
will this work on sony alpha cameras? i heard you need to modify the camera in order for this to work? I have a7s and a6500
I have not tried it on the camera.I have heard that you need to modify the filters on the sensor so that it only sees infrared light. The filter is very dark to the normal eye, but the film has no problem receiving the infrared. you would think that no light is getting through. Good like!
