Tiffen 58DIGEK3 overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 58mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit contains all the basics that an outdoor digital shooter requires.

UV Protector
These are wise initial investments. They help protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

Circular Polarizer
Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

Neutral Density
Neutral Density filters from Tiffen have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the either the sensor of a digital camera or the film plane of a traditional film camera. Neutral Density filters are used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since they allow the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And since they can also help to control your depth of field, they permit you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, their value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The entire kit comes with a Tiffen padded storage pouch that will help keep your filters clean and free from dust, dirt, fingerprints and other contaminants,.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

UV Protector

Tiffen filters provide additional benefits of correction for Ultraviolet(UV) light which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details
If desired they can be left on the lens at all times for protection

Circular Polarizer

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays to remove haze from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Makes a blue sky bluer
Enhances clouds

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Tiffen Quality
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two optical glass sheets. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process
Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly makes its filters in the USA and backs up its products with a solid 10-year warranty

    Tiffen 58DIGEK3 reviews

58mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 87.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality Standard Filters I'm far more used to using filters on my video camera, but I bought these for use with my brand new Canon Rebel T3i. On my most recent trip through three National Parks I found occasion to use all three filters; of course, the UV filters stays on my lens at all times. I was able to use the polarizer while hiking through Twenty Lakes Basin, seeing right down to the bottom of the crystal clear shallow lakes that line the trail. I used the ND filter to shoot water as well - a long exposure of the rushing water of Mist Falls in Kings Canyon. The pouch that comes with the filters is very handy as well, fitting up to four filters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good starter kit I was looking for a starter kit that contained polarizing and neutral density filters. I had never used filters before, and wanted to get my feet wet before I spent a lot of money. My first trip out I get some great shots, particularly when stacking the filters. I would recommend this set for anyone beginning with filters. It comes with a handy case, too, as well as a UV filter. There was no better deal out there that I could find.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This kit is better than expected I purchased this 58mm filter kit with HOYA's 52mm filters for my OM-D E-M5. I was not sure about this kit's quality when ordered, but I was little surprised about the precision finish and glass quality by comparing HOYA's products. It looks Tiffen has very good technology for manufacturing filters. This is good products with very reasonable price. I will probably buy other products by them when I need more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basic kit does the job. These may not be considered the best but for the price they get the job done for any one looking to control light for home movies. The polarized filter works great for a bright snow covered scene I'm sure it'll will equally as well if on the beach. The UV will keep your lens free from debris if your concerned that the kids are going to sling their spaghetti at you while filming. Haven't used the density just yet. Given the nature of my filming the Polarized for bright conditions is the main selling point. The clear so i so i don't have to risk scratching my main lens in the even i have debris, Even if the lenses are durable Id rather not have to touch it to clean if i don't have too. If the density cuts down haze then this is a good consumer level product. haven't had them long so i cant comment on the longevity of the tint but contrary to other reviews Ive read they seem to be built well time will tell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Pictures I have always heard that filters help your photos look better but was too scared because I didn't know which one(s) to get. This is a great kit for starters like myself. It has a good assortment of filters without being too advanced. I looked at other filters and was overwhelmed, but this is just right without breaking the budget. The only drawback is I still don't know which one to use at the right time and there is a lot of trial and error. I guess that is why they invented digital cameras, so you can erase and not waste film.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Qaulity in every shot The optics of these filters are impressive and the fact they're made in the USA speaks to Tiffen's commitment to quality. These filter helped reduce glass reflection and made possible the otherwise unattainable shot of an Airbus A-380 from inside an aiport terminal! I can't imagine taking pictures without this lense kit in my camera bag.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not so sure.... With my lens, I thought I'd try the Tiffen for a change. Being US made, I figured these would be pretty decent. However, the package price for 3 filters should have been the giveaway. As a basic camera protection packge it's fine. The polarising filter however is useless compared to my Hoya. Doing a direct comparasion on same angle of light, the Tiffen hardly made a difference at all. Fitting the filters on it also very fiddly as they are thin and the thread not so great. Even fitting the lens cap, it only just hangs on.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from UV had bad threads The filters were fine but the threads were not good on the UV. I am afraid they may wreck the threads on my lens if I force it. The other two were fine. Thinking I will have to return it.
