Does this work with the Panasonic GH4?
I can't give a solid answer. I have a couple of Fuji X Mount cameras. The plug on this remote is designed to work with Canon cameras. It does work perfectly with my Fuji.===The functional protocols for remote shutter releases are pretty straightforward. If your camera has the appropriate size socket for a wired shutter control, this should work.

Can you recommend an extension cable that will allow me to use it further from the camera?
I went to the B&H store and talked to a professional in person about this and he suggested a LANC extension cable that works perfectly. I use the Vello RS-C1II + a 12-foot ProAm USA LANC Remote Extension Cable (purchased from B&H) on both my Canon EOS 70D and my EOS Rebel XS (which I use to operate a photo booth). On the EOS Rebel XS, it does not require changing any camera settings. Simply plus the LANC extension into the remote port on the side of the camera. connect the Vello corded remote, and it will act as the shutter release when pressed. On the 70D, I have to change the settings to remote trigger in order of the setup to work.
