Vello RS-S1II overview

  • 1Description

Whether you are shooting in the studio or outdoors, the Vello RS-S1II Wired Remote Switch provides photographers using select Sony and Minolta cameras with a simple way to control exposures and an easy-to-use tool to create more "keepers". The device is larger and more comfortable to use than many other remote devices, with a thick, sturdy cord.

The RS-S1II is compatible with autofocusing, continuous shooting or single image capture, and long exposures. It will autofocus on a half press of the button and trigger the shutter with a full press. Also, users can press the button and slide it forward to lock it for long exposures. Since you can trigger exposures without touching the camera, you will capture sharp, blur-free images. Additionally, the unit does not require batteries as it draws its power from the camera, making it an extremely useful tool to keep in your studio or gear bag.

    Vello RS-S1II reviews

RS-S1II Wired Remote Switch for Select Sony and Minolta cameras is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 37.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, Inexpensive piece of kit Zero complaints on this one, very happy with it. This is your barebones, no-nonsense wired remote shutter release. The button has plenty of travel for shutter half-presses, and locks in place for bulb. It's light and well sized for most hand sizes. Excellent piece of kit, so long as it's all you need.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from useful equipment I use this Switch for macro photography to avoid camera shake. I used earlier the camera timer so the camera had a bit time (e.g. 2 seconds) to stabilize after pressing the shutter button. When taking large number of photos for stacking this way made the whole process very long - additional 2 sec on every photo. With the remote switch I can shoot straight after each increment on the rail. The Switch works fine. The only minor thing I would expect better is that the button is too deep and a bit wobbly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised It's a cable release, hardly rocket science. Reasonable price compared to some of the others out there, and actuates both half-press, full press, and has a 'slide-lock' action for long exposures in bulb mode. The only thing that would make this a tiny bit better is if it had a small integrated cord-wrapping loop built into the remote end, for a little bit nicer packing in a camera bag without requiring a rubber band or velcro cord-keeper...but that's a tiny nitpick not even worth a star removal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A useful product A very useful item for remote use of shutter button. The 24 inch long cord is only good for close to the camera use but is the only thing needed for most shots. I would recomend it for any serious photographer as a must part of their gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Now Beefier I Originally bought this cable release a couple years ago and proceeded to stuff it into one of the smaller pockets my camera bag (a canvas attach affair). I've tried wireless remotes (IR actually) and don't particularly care for them as they may only work when pointed at the perfect angle and the battery can die which makes you wonder why you went wireless in the first place. A physically connected cable release costs less too. The RS-S1 that I purchased a couple years ago did the trick for me - physically connected, two stage trigger with locking mechanism for BULB exposures should you need it. The only gripe was the neck area where the cable connects to the main body. Unfortunately the rubberized neck area wore down with the wear and tear of taking it out of and shoving it back into the tight pocket of my camera bag until the actual wires were exposed. I meant to wrap some electrical tape around the exposed wires of the neck area but one of the wires broke before I got around to it (procrastination). With few options for wired remotes that fit the Sony Alpha-35, I purchased another RS-S1 without realizing Vello tacked II onto the end of the model designation (now it's the RS-S1 II). The II I'm happy to report not only has beefier cabling, the neck area where the cabling enters the main body is significantly more robust than with the original model. I was planning on heat-shrink-tubing the neck connection area but the II takes care of the issue. The reinforced plastic/rubber neck is more than up to what I can throw at it. I don't know if people complained about the previous iteration but Vello seems to have read my thoughts with the II. Way to go!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good inexpensive remote. This remote is a nice accessory for my Sony A77II. I'd rather have a wired remote than wireless because it's more reliable-when you press the button you know it's going to fire the camera for sure. The button works the same way as the shutter button-press it halfway to activate certain functions and all the way to take the picture. It even has a lock for long exposures. And the price can't be beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great! I ordered this unit to replace a wireless one I have. The wireless one was to picky on where you were standing, and I missed too many shots with it. This works as intended. The only thing is I wish, was that the cord were longer. But that's just me. I had my Sony set on sports action mode the other day, and you just push the button, and leave it pushed. Made for some really good humming bird pics.
