Vello LA-CEF-M42 Overview

Make the most of your existing collection of M42-mount glass with this Vello Lens Adapter that will allow you to mount these lenses to a Canon EF/EF-S-mount camera. Precise construction makes it easy to attach these adapted lenses to your camera and keeps it secure during use. Infinity focus is guaranteed, ensuring that you get proper functionality our of all your optics. Additionally, the adapter is made from a durable zinc alloy and features a matte black finish on the inside to reduce the potential for glare and reflections that can negatively impact image quality.

Although the lens will fit physically, autofocus, automatic diaphragm (AE metering), and other functions dependent on communication between camera body and lens will be disrupted by the lens adapter. You will need to focus manually, and to set exposures manually or meter in aperture priority (stop-down) mode. Focusing to infinity is retained.

This adapter enables the use of M42 lenses on Canon EF/EF-S-mount cameras, meaning you can now use your existing stable of lenses on your current camera. It is also very secure, holding the lens in place without any wobble sometimes associated with the adapting process.
Thanks to precise manufacturing, this adapter is guaranteed to provide infinity focus by placing the lens at the correct distance from the sensor. This allows you to make the most of your lenses and doesn't limit you from shooting distant subjects.
Made from a durable zinc alloy, this adapter will withstand many uses and won't wear or break in the way soft brass or cheap plastic would.

I love to shoot on old glass, especially old Pentax/Ashai lenses form the late 60s and early 70s. I just screw these on and with the Metabones T-Cine adapter, I can switch out lenses really quickly.

works great for old Zeiss Jena lenses

Perfect for mounting my vintage circa-1940's Zeiss lenses on a DSLR. They're optically equal or even better then many modern lenses, and since the adapter is glass-less, it means that the optical quality of the lens isn't degraded. Manual focus and aperture forces me to slow down and pay attention. Just set the camera to M and you're good to go! The only thing it's missing is the AE/AF chip on the back of some other branded adapters (assuming that they even work...).

Works

Works as expected so far. I have another M42 and I might buy another instead of trying to screw and unscrew the same one over and over again.

I ordered this to be able to use my older screw mount lenses on the Canon camera. It works just fine. Now I can use my Pentax screw mount lenses on my Canon body also. I always seem to find what I need at B&H. Michael D.

Good ring, works great

I use this for mounting some old Vivitar lenses. It locks up tight with my Canon 6D body and threads easy with all my M42 mount lenses. I only had issues with one 50 mm lens that has the aperture ring right next to the mounting threads. The aperture ring (on the lens) has a small protrusion that prevented me from screwing the lens all the way flush against the mount and also prevented operation of the aperture ring. After deciding the protrusion offered no benefit to me, I ended up filing it off. It works great now. It was NOT the fault of this product and the mod was done to the lens. But it is worth checking your lenses to make sure there isn't anything that will interfere with threading all the way flush. I think the flush ness and narrowness of this ring is important for achieving proper focus distance and preventing vignetting. It does mean that there isn't a lot of ring to grip if you try to mount the ring onto the camera body without a lens. If you put the adapter on the lens first though, it mounts to the body as easy as any EF lens.

question

Is this adapter slim? I would like to adapt a Peleng 8mm fisheye to a Canon 7D to reduce vignetting. There is a Canon EF Mount version but with the cost of more vignetting. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you.
Asked by: Paul
This adapter is very slim and I haven't seen any vignetting on my 5DkmIV. I'd watch out for any flange that might stick out from the back of the lens - using Pentax M42 mount lenses, they have a flange for actuating the shutter and my mirror smacks it, which is not good at all. Just take a loot at the lens and if something stick out of the mounting side, I'd get a different adapter that gives you more room.

question

Does this change the lens focal length for crop sensor or full frame? Does this change the lens f stop? Thanks!!
Asked by: Anonymous
It does neither. If you are using 35mm lenses with an M42 mount they will crop according to the crop factor of the sensor of the camera you are fitting them to with this adapter. I used this adapter together with a Metabones Canon - Sony E-mount adapter too. No change in focal length other than the sensor crop factor. There is no F-stop change either. Hope this helps!

question

I bought 3 of these based on the reviews here and they are all unacceptably loose once tightened. They actually wiggle in the connection between the VELLO to Metabones adapter. (I have no issues with regular EF Canon lenses). Does anyone have the same problem?
Asked by: Bohdan
I have not had this problem but remember these screw mount lenses are not, by themselves, locked in place. Also the mount is screwed into the lense and the mount on the lens itself can loosen. Bayonet is the standard for this reason. If you regulat lenses do not wiggle, then I think it is the Pentax mount and not the adapter. Did you switch back and forth with the Pentax lens auto button to see if that is causing the problem?

question

Does this adapter have focus confirmation?
Asked by: Kenneth
It's only a mechanical connection, with no electronic communication for focus or exposure. It's helpful for telescopes, microscopes, and other sorts of equipment and it will allow an M42 lens to be screwed into a Canon camera; but only using manual focus and exposure adjustment. That said, it's nicely machined and low profile which is what I was seeking.
