Understanding Color Correction Filters and Color Gels
Color correction filters are lighting tools used in photography, cinematography, and live performances. There are many color filters and gels available to choose from, as well as filter and gel accessories.
Why Use Color Correction Filters?
Use color correction filters to adjust the color, white balance, and light temperature, in addition to other lighting issues. These filters control the random mix of hues that appear naturally by absorbing unwanted tones and enhancing others. You can use colored film and photography gels to introduce color to movies and photos to set a mood or to create a unique look. Most filters feature thin plastic sheets, though others, like colored glass filters, consist of other materials.
Color Filters vs. Diffusers
While filters and diffusers both work to provide color correction and lighting alterations, there are differences in how they work. Diffusers scatter light particles to make the lighting appear softer, warmer, and more natural. Their ability to reduce the intensity and harsh shadows makes them popular choices for portraits. Umbrellas, softboxes, gels, and fabrics are typical examples of diffusers. Depending on your desired effect, you may use color filters and diffusers together to achieve the perfect end result.
Choosing Filters for Lights
It's a smart idea to consider different types of color effects filters and gels when you want to evoke a particular emotion or enhance the lighting temperature. For example, professionals may use dichroic filters to convert daylight temperatures or to produce more natural-looking effects. They often have better filtering capabilities than standard filters. Polarizing filters work well for taking photos in nature because they increase saturation and reduce glare. Other gel filters for lights create special effects such as stars and sparkles for invoking dream-like qualities to pictures and videos.
