Reikan FoCal 98001 overview

  • 1Description

Calibrate most Canon and Nikon cameras and lenses with FoCal Plus Lens Calibration from Reikan. In addition to the software license, a 150mm standard hard target is included to provide the most accurate calibration. The straightforward software runs on your Windows or Mac computer for added convenience. Using your camera's USB cable, FoCal connects and operates your camera remotely, capturing test images, downloading and analyzing each image in real time.

Setting up the calibration is easy; simply attach the included FoCal Target to a wall with your camera set up on a tripod set to live view for accurate alignment. As soon as the target is set up, the automatic focus calibration process takes over providing a quick and error free result for up to 5 cameras at the same time.

Focal Plus is not recommended to be used with lenses of 400mm or longer.

    Reikan FoCal 98001 reviews

Focal Plus Lens Calibration is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from software works but not accurate I've used the software for a while now and calibrate two Canon cameras (5D4 and 5DSR) with multiple L-series primes. I found the software runs fine and says it has conclusive results, however you can clearly see the before and after are often worse than when set at '0'. I also found after spending a day calibrating all my lenses and writing down settings and double checking that when I was shooting multiple portraits that everything was soft and that when I disabled the micro adjustment everything fell back into focus. I think there are some serious issues here. And yes I followed the instructions and shot on a tripod in a dark room etc. etc...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! Absolutely worth the money! I can't count how many days or weeks of my life I've wasted in the past trying to manually calibrate my lenses with one of those stupid 45 degree ruler / chart systems only to have it repeatedly fail with inconsistent results and me finally giving up and turning off the adjustments. The whole process is automated and has squeezed every last bit of sharpness out of my lenses. I never expected phase detect to be this inconsistent, nor my lenses to require this much micro adjust, but it does and the results are super awesome! I seriously wish camera manufacturers give us multi distance adjustments!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works really well It takes a bit to figure it out but once you have your groove it is really easy. The key as others have said is establishing a good setup. Good lighting and a neutral background made all the difference for me. My first pass I had the target on a glass door with a screen door behind. That confused the software in terms of finding the target. When I switched to a cork bulletin board as the backdrop, I had little problem going forward. Good setup is the key.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works, Bad Documentation, Support Bought this software to fine tune lenses on my D7100. When I finally figured out how to use it, it did work and gave me the align numbers for my lenses. The documentation is poor in that it leaves out details on how to set up the software, so you have to use trial and error to figure it out. I sent a request to customer support a week ago and have never received a response. Better documentation and support would have probably made this a five star product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it if you're into the maximum focus accuracy After having little success with the free methods to adjust the autofocus micro adjustment (AFMA) for my Canon 5dmkii, I decided to try FoCal Plus 2.0. It works amazingly well -- in fact for some cameras, like my 5dmkii, once the process is started, it is completely hands-free. Otherwise, you have to adjust the AFMA to what the program tells you during the test as it determines the best setting. Typically, that's 3 or 4 times during the test, I'm told. If you want the best performance from your lenses, invest in this product. The only bummer is that the program doesn't qualify for free shipping. What's up with that?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Software unusable, Customer Service non-responsive I paid $90 for useless software. Downloaded Reikan FoCal Plus on multiple computers but the software crashes every single time the camera is attached. Tried contacting Reikan's customer service multiple times but never received a response. Apparently this is a common problem with this software. Save yourself the hassle (and money) and find a different software that actually works.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I wish I would have bought this a long time ago! Only giving it 4 stars because of time it took me to get it set up and calibrating. Once I had it going though it was super quick and was able to calibrate my 35mm and 85mm very quickly. So happy with the results. I found my 35mm slipping on focus the past few weeks and this has fixed the problem. Love it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cool product but it is NOT fully automated Well if you've ever experienced frustration looking at your telephoto shots, cropping in and the sharpness is absent then this may very well be the product for you. Yep it could actually be the relationship between the lens and the sensor and not you abilitiy as a photographer! Just one thing to be aware of when using the product: Most cameras will NOT allow the program to automatically set lens to camera focal plain, take for example the Canon 5D M3. So you will have to manually go into your cameras menu during the procedure and change the setting from extreme minus to plus ranges and in between, approximately 6 manual settings. After completing that it does its algorithm and picks the optimal setting on a per lens relationship that you then must set so it is permanently stored in your cameras configuration setup. So just understand you will want good controlled lighting, solid support ie Tripod and there will be manual interaction throughout the whole process. Tip: Be sure the TARGET is optimally lined, not on the fringe but close to center as possible. Otherwise you will also have to realign, move the camera during the process as well. I found that it significantly improved Telephoto focus issues more than Wide issues that suffered from outer edge blurring. Still this is the best product out there that I have seen.
