Reikan FoCal FoCal Plus Reviews

Not perfect, but very helpful

FoCal Plus (later upgraded to Pro) is very helpful toward the goal of nailing AF Microadjustment and certainly better than (at least, my) eyeballing attempts to do so. The automated Set-Up Tool makes set-up less complicated than feared from comments in some reviews. Repeated tests to gain confidence in the results have persuaded me that in the vast majority of cases the results are accurate within +/- 1 AFMA and more often than not dead-on. For lenses up to 200mm it is essential to have test space (such as a hallway) 20-25 feet long with receptacles for supplementary lighting of the target. The aperture and consistency of focus tests added with the Pro version make that upgrade worthwhile to me. Overall I am very pleased with my original purchase and the upgrade.

Nice working calibration software

Easy to set up. One issue I had was my camera was showing not registered when I plugged in the camera to my laptop. There were no instructions to resolve this. Then I went into the settings and there is an option to register the camera. Then I completed the calibration outdoors and the lighting was good and it completed the calibration for the 24-70mm 2.8 Tamron lens for Canon. Result was +4 for the 24mm (W (wide) setting. But there is also a T (Tall) setting for the lens. So again not clear what to do to get both settings for the lens. Do I run it again at 70mm? Anyway that is what I did and got +5. I just set it at +5 for both W & T and the lens now focuses much better. So a good rating but more clear instructions would help.

I was worried about some of the reviews because it was like a 50/50 chance of it working, but it has significantly made my images sharper! Extremely happy with this and the software does all the work for you. The only con is that it takes a lot to get it up and running properly, it does have a test feature to make sure the picture is in the right position, lighting, distance and etc....when all of that is good then the software does the work for you

Software unusable, Customer Service non-responsive

I paid $90 for useless software. Downloaded Reikan FoCal Plus on multiple computers but the software crashes every single time the camera is attached. Tried contacting Reikan's customer service multiple times but never received a response. Apparently this is a common problem with this software. Save yourself the hassle (and money) and find a different software that actually works.

Worth it if you're into the maximum focus accuracy

After having little success with the free methods to adjust the autofocus micro adjustment (AFMA) for my Canon 5dmkii, I decided to try FoCal Plus 2.0. It works amazingly well -- in fact for some cameras, like my 5dmkii, once the process is started, it is completely hands-free. Otherwise, you have to adjust the AFMA to what the program tells you during the test as it determines the best setting. Typically, that's 3 or 4 times during the test, I'm told. If you want the best performance from your lenses, invest in this product. The only bummer is that the program doesn't qualify for free shipping. What's up with that?

software works but not accurate

I've used the software for a while now and calibrate two Canon cameras (5D4 and 5DSR) with multiple L-series primes. I found the software runs fine and says it has conclusive results, however you can clearly see the before and after are often worse than when set at '0'. I also found after spending a day calibrating all my lenses and writing down settings and double checking that when I was shooting multiple portraits that everything was soft and that when I disabled the micro adjustment everything fell back into focus. I think there are some serious issues here. And yes I followed the instructions and shot on a tripod in a dark room etc. etc...

Surprisingly (after reading some reviews) straightforward

Used Reikan FoCal Plus to calibrate 3 lens with a Canon 90D. Two lens were Canon L glass (200mm f/2.8 L II, 24-70mm f/2.8 L II) and one lens Tamron (10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II). Took less than 2 hours total including first time set-up of target, camera on tripod, and lighting (two desk lamps positioned close to target). Reikan FoCal Plus provided clear instructions and progress updates in each case, including very helpful set-up instructions for fine-tuning lighting and distances between camera and target. Ran several times for each lens to verify results. Very pleased with focus improvement for lenses, especially the Canon 200mm f/2.8 L II.

Pretty Easy to Use, mostly Effective

The Focal Lens Calibration software was easily downloaded and installed. I first put it on my Desktop computer, but discovered that the lighting was woefully insufficient in that work area, so I installed the S/W on my laptop instead. Setting it up tethered to my Canon camera was a snap, and other than distance-to-target and target-lighting, the calibrations all went quickly and smoothly. In my case (a Canon 6D), the process was a breeze, as the S/W could do all in-camera changes itself. Distance-to-target can be a challenge (though there is an easy tool in the S/W to guide you), and good lighting could only be achieve outdoors (and thus the use of a laptop). I found some of the micro-adjusts to really improve lens performance, but have one lens (24-70 F2.8) that the adjusts seem to worsen its performance. I might also recommend the Pro version of the software for all of the other bells and whistles in it -- especially the Sharpness vs Aperture testing.

Is there any possibility you can use a monopod? I don't use or have a tripod.
Asked by: Carol
Hi Carol, Thank you for your interest in Reikan FoCal. A tripod is a required part of calibration and testing in order to achieve consistent and accurate results. Using a monopod won't work as it would not keep the camera stable enough for a series of test images to be taken. Best Regards, Dave

For zoom lenses, do you need to only calibrate ...

For zoom lenses, do you need to only calibrate the lens at one focal length or should you calibrate the lens at transitional points (24, 35, 50, and 70mm for a 24-70mm zoom)? If so, is the in camera's CPU smart enough to blend the "different" calibrations as the lens is zoomed.
Asked by: Charles
It is best to calibrate the lens at most focal ranges to get maximum calibration. Some lenses don't marry up the same with all cameras, so it is best to calibrate at most ranges.

Asked by: Bill
Hi Bill, FoCal Plus is limited to calibrating lenses up to 400mm focal length, you could calibrate the 200-500mm at the wider end but not at the telephoto end. With focal lengths over 400mm (i.e. 401mm and more) you would need to instead use FoCal Pro Best Regards, Dave

question

Will this Work for Nikon 80-400G lense
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, it works with the 80-400mm.You'll need a sturdy tripod (I used a gitzo series 3) and good light. Other than that, follow the distance guide from the focal website, which is about 26ft from a 150mm target. It is harder to get the target setup initially at 400mm, but works fine.
