Tiffen UV Protector Filter Overview

The Tiffen 77mm UV Protector Wide Angle Mount Filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. This filter is especially useful when photographing at high altitudes or around bodies of water. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others.

The UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

This filter features a slimmer profile mounting ring, which is ideal for use with wide angle lenses. It does not have front filter threads for stacking filters.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings.

Absorbs some ultraviolet light and reduces bluish cast of daylight.
Clear filter provides no additional coloration or contrast, allowing you to pair this filter with others.
General protection filter reduces dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching lens elements.

My use of Tiffen filters goes back to about 1959. This one feels, and seems, to uphold the legacy.

Saved my lenses twice

On two occasions in the past 4 years I have experienced an unfortunate bag drop with a downward-facing lens stored inside, and on both occasions the UV Protector Filters, which I leave applied to my lenses at all times, have shattered and taken the brunt of the fall and left the lenses undamaged. I recommend to everyone I speak with about photography to invest in a UV Protector Filter to protect valuable lenses from basic dirt, dust and scratches; and as an insurance policy to potentially prevent a $2500 spill. This item is an absolute necessity and I will not shoot without one on the front of my lens. It would be totally reckless not to have a UV Protector Filter applied to a lens from the moment it is taken out of the box. I cannot praise and recommend this simple, inexpensive item highly enough.

Grabbed one of these as a protection filter to keep on my lens when not using another filter. It does it's job well.

No More Scratched Glass Worries

I took test shots on my Canon R6 with and without this Tiffen filter. There was no discernable decrease in image quality with the filter on. It's great when you are always ready to shoot. No more missed shots. If you are tired of putting the lens cap back on every time you take a break, here is a quality and inexpensive alternative. I do put the cap back on when I am done for the day and put the camera back in my bag.

With the wide angle version, can you still put your lens cap on while this filter is on the lens, or would you have to take it off to apply the lens cap?
Asked by: Lucas
You may be able to use it with a lens cap but it's entirely dependent on how the lens cap is designed and how it attaches.

What's the difference between the wide angle version and the regular one? It is better to get a "wide angle" filter instead the regular one for a 17-40L?
Asked by: Diego
Yes, wide angle filters are thinner. If you are using with an APS-C size sensor either thin or regular filters will work. For full frame sensor cameras and the 17-40 lens, a wide angle filter will avoid any possible vignetting of the corners.

question

Are Tiffen filters multi-coated?
Asked by: Anonymous
While some Tiffen filters are multi-coated, the Tiffen 77mm UV Protector Filter listed above is not. The Tiffen 77mm UV Haze 86 Digital HT Filter, B&H # TIH86DHT77, would be the only 77mm UV filter from Tiffen which would be multi-coated.
