Tiffen 49UVP overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 49mm UV Protector Filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. This filter is especially useful when photographing at high altitudes or around bodies of water. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others.

The UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings.

Absorbs some ultraviolet light and reduces bluish cast of daylight.
Clear filter provides no additional coloration or contrast, allowing you to pair this filter with others.
General protection filter reduces dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching lens elements.

    Tiffen 49UVP reviews

49mm UV Protector Filter is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 98.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Subpar, to say the least. I found that this protector, and the 52mm one I bought at the same time, were not very well sealed at all. The glass rattles around inside the ring and dust enters freely. And when I say rattles around I really mean it, it's like I've got a bell stuck on my collar to warn away the pigeons. Of course, for $, I wasn't expecting perfection, but this is pretty shoddy. Optically, it's prone to flare and ghosting. For what I use this for--protecting the front element of a 30 year old lens worth that I only use occasionally from hard knocks--this is acceptable, but for anything more than that, bite the bullet and go with a nice B+W MRC UV filter.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works OK, but recommend MRC filter I bought this filter to use with my Sony NEX-5 18-55mm lens. It fits well and easily onto the lens with no problem. However, as other users have pointed out, it may cause some lens flaring or reflections with pointed at sources of light such as lamps/sun/spotlights, etc. One way to avoid this is just to avoid having these items in your field of view, but if you want to just eliminate this problem in a set-and-forget kind of way, I would recommend the B+W UV MRC-coated filter, which I subsequently bought and am currently using instead of this Tiffen filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effective lens protection I like to use these UV filters on my lenses when I take my camera out into potentially hazardous environments. Some might say that adding another layer of glass to a lens could affect image quality - I have yet to see any degradation in any of the images I shot with this UV filter on my lens. I believe only pixel peepers would notice a big difference. If IQ is such a concern, remove the filter before taking a shot. It's cheap insurance. I learned the hard way after ruining an expensive lens when an unexpected gust of wind kicked up some debris and effectively sandblasted my lens. Don't let this happen to you!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality I purchased this as protection for my lens. The filter arrived in an unopened container from B&H. There were 3 specks of dust on it, one of which I could not remove. I ordered another filter from another manufacturer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good protection but lots of reflections Good for: -Fits on my SEL35f18 Sony E Mount Lens -Protecting lens from dust and grime Not good for: -Lots of reflections and ghosting, especially annoying when shooting in low light, you get what you pay for

Rated 3 out of 5 by from UV filter Lens protection on an expensive lens. Solidly made but the Tiffen lettering on the filter rim is crookedly applied and scratch/mark on internal thread.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rigid, affordable I purchased this for my Sony E-mount 55-210mm OSS lens to protect my lens from dust and debris. It does the job as intended. I had previously purchased a Hoya brand 49mm filter for my Sony E-mount 50mm OSS lens and the glass part of the filter is loose inside of the metal ring, and has been since the day I bought it. The Tiffen version has no such issues and feels rigid and well built.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great UV Filter for Protecting Your Lens This UV Filter provides great all around protection from bumps. However, in low light settings Indid notice some lens flare when aiming the camera lens towards a light source. Just something to be aware of. I may look into purchasing a variable neutral density filter instead.
