The Tiffen 58mm UV Protector Filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. This filter is especially useful when photographing at high altitudes or around bodies of water. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others.

The UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings.

Absorbs some ultraviolet light and reduces bluish cast of daylight.
Clear filter provides no additional coloration or contrast, allowing you to pair this filter with others.
General protection filter reduces dust, moisture, and scratches from reaching lens elements.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Acceptable for the price I bought this to protect the lens. I take it off for most of the stuff I do, but leave it on when the lens is in my bag or when using it outdoors. This is a cheap UV filter that performs the function, however the glass was so loose when got it I thought there was broken glass in the package. On inspection I found that the retaining ring was just loose, and rather than hassel with returns I just fixed it and moved on. I'm not unhappy with it but not particularly impressed either - but hey - it's just a UV filter. If I could rate it at 2.5 stars I would. Yes I would reccomend it to a friend with the above disclaimer. And I would buy one again for the same purpose.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Clear Protector I use this filter as a lens protector for my Canon 50mm 1.4. It is fairly scratch resistant. I've never had a problem with it in terms of scratches, but I also keep my lenses in optimum conditions. The only downside is that when shooting at night into lights, you get a mirrored glare from any lights in your shot. Sometimes the same effect will occur in the daylight if the sun is shining into the lens at certain angles. In those instances, I simply unscrew it and replace it before putting it away.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Protect your lens I actually haven't used this much and really don't see me using it much in the future. It does what it says it does well, but I'm just not a fan of putting an extra piece of glass on my lens unless it does something more noticeable. The only reason I even got this is because it was pretty cheap, and it wouldn't hurt me to have it in my bag. Most people use this filter as a front element of the lens protector.I however do live in a high smog and haze area and may change my mind as I take my camera out more often. I do want to the clearest picture possible.used on a 50mm f/1.4g w/ a D800

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Shouldn't be dirty from the factory The product itself was dirty straight out of the package, and actually has a spot I haven't been able to completely remove. Overall the product is well put together, and if you ignore the little spot, it seems to work fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easier to replace than your front element This isn't a filter you buy to make your photos better. It's a filter you buy to protect your lens from harm, and it does that just fine. If there's a difference in the general photo quality one way or the other, I can't detect it. The only drawback is the ghostly lights that appear opposite any bright light sources in dark photos. These are much more visible with the filter on than with the naked lens, and may be distracting in some cases. Luckily, this filter comes off just as easily as it goes on so that is an easy fix, when the situation calls for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT! I have this filter on a telephoto lens of mine and I am glad I did. I had my camera bag hanging on the corner edge of a door. I didn't think it would fall but the bad did fall. I opened the bag and thought the lens broke but as I cleaned the glass off of the lens, I found that it was the filter that broke and not the lens. The lens was as good as new. I am so grateful for the filter so I bought a new one and it's on my lens right now. :

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Protector Filter does as expected I bought this lens filter just to protect the surface of my lens. I just want it to be clear and not interfere with the operation of the lens. It works as expected. It is clear so it does not interfere with my picture taking. It also provides another surface in front of the lens to absorb any abuse. I don't know if it helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight and don't care if it does.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basic Cover This is a simple glass cover for your lens. There may be some incidental UV filtration, but I haven't noticed any drastic change. The language of the documentation included even admits that this cover is more of a protection implement than a true filter. Perhaps for a distant landscape in full sunlight as depicted on the box, you would notice some difference, but for everyday shots, I have not seen any quality improvement. However, it is good for keeping fingerprints and scratches off the glass of your expensive lens and works perfectly for that.
