The Sensei PRO 49-52mm Brass Step-Up Ring permits the use of 52mm threaded filters on lenses with 49mm filter threads. It features brass construction and is coated with a matte black finish to minimize reflections. Brass offers enhanced durability and resistance to warping over conventional aluminum rings and is also less prone to jamming or binding to additional step-up rings, filters, or lenses. This step-up ring has large side knurlings to provide a more textured grip when mounting or removing it from a lens.

I own other sizes of these Sensei rings in aluminum and this is the first I've bought in brass, (the PRO version). This one seems a lot sturdier than the aluminum ones. I believe it far less likely to loose its threads or to get stuck. From now on I'm buying the PRO versions.

Is it more practical to buy a brass step up ring, or will an aluminum ring do the same thing at a lesser charge?

My experience is that brass jams less than aluminum. Aluminum seems to gall more easily. Keep in mind that some bushings are made of brass (some use bronze) but never aluminum.

If you are referring to the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 lens, yes the lens has a 72mm thread and so the step up ring will allow you to use 77mm filters.
