Tiffen 55mm Circular Polarizer Filters - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

Tiffen Circular Polarizer Overview

Tiffen 55mm Circular Polarizer Filters - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Can dramatically enhance a blue sky and make the clouds more prominent
Used best at right angle to the sun
Effective with cameras that use beam splitters in the path of the TTL light meter and with AF cameras

So far it seems like it's working pretty well! Solidly made at the very least but we'll find out!

Doesn't seem to do anything

I've used circular polarizing filters before. I've seen the impact of rotating the filter element. This one doesn't seem to have any influence at all.

See any errors on this page?

question

Can I use this filter on Sony HX300? Is it threaded?
Asked by: Norm R.
It is threaded and should fit any 55 mm lense. I'm not familiar with the Sony hx300 but generally the filter fits lenses. Not nessisarily fixed cameras that doesn't have interchangeable lenses

question

Will this fit tiffen 49 to 55 step ring?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it would. The second number in step-up ring designations always comment on the filter size, the first number is always regarding the lens' thread size.

question

Can I use this filter on a Canon 60mm macro lens with an MR-14EX ring flash? If so, what size do I need. Thanks!
Asked by: Matthew W.
Size aside (wont you need a 60mm filter for a 60 mm lens?), using a polarizer with a ring flash might produce unusual results: some of the light from the ring will get cut out through polarization and some will not. Other things to watch out for: if the filter goes on first and then ring flash screws on after, it might sit too far out and the edge of the ring may be visible in the frame (depending on the type of macro lens elements)

Will this fit a Nikon d3200 18-55mm lens
Asked by: Austin
Nikon D3200 was bundle with the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II Lens which has a 52mm filter thread size. You will need Tiffen 52mm Circular Polarizing Filter instead of the Tiffen 55mm Circular Polarizing Filter.
