Cartoni Focus 8 Fluid Head with Sliding Plate & APTP2 Tripod (75mm)

Featuring the lightweight 75mm Focus 8 Fluid Head with a Sliding Plate System, this Cartoni Kit is designed for entry-level users who shoot with up to 17.7 lb of load. The Focus 8 provides perfect balance along its entire +/-90° tilt range, and features continuous counterbalance adjustment.

The kit also includes the APTP2 Aluminum Dual-Stage Tripod Legs, which feature 27-60.6" height adjustment and non-slip flip clamps, a mid-level spreader, rubber tripod feet, and a soft carry case with foam interior, leather handles, shoulder strap, and exterior pockets. Everything is designed, manufactured, and assembled at the Cartoni factory in Rome, Italy. The Focus 8 Fluid Head comes with the peace of mind of a five-year warranty, and all the other items retain their standard one-year warranty.

The Focus 8 consists of 127 parts, machined or cast to micrometric precision and hand-assembled and adjusted to precision by one engineer at a time. A follow-up to the Cartoni Focus HD head and an evolution of the original Focus head, this Focus 8 incorporates the same quick release plate system as on the Sachtler Ace and Manfrotto video heads, and integrates a new composite material in many parts that allows for a solid build while keeping the weight down. Of course, it also features Cartoni's renowned counterbalance and very smooth, "true" fluid drag. The Focus 8 uses the same patented spring-loaded counterbalance system used in the original Focus head.

The new composite material that's used is a sophisticated non-metal that's much stronger than aluminum, and yet lighter. It is used in the tilt fluid knobs, pan fluid gears, and other parts throughout the body. This composite is also highly resistant to the stress of weight, bending, rubbing, and extreme temperatures, so where it's used in the mechanisms of the head it actually provides for more stress endurance, in addition to saving weight. This composite is the result of a collaboration between Cartoni and the Department of Physics and Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome.

The Focus 8 features a Cartoni-patented labyrinth modular fluid drag system, which consists of individual pan and tilt modules. Each module contains two main sections that have thin concentric rings inside them. The rings in one section interact with the rings in the other, with aerospace industry silicon paste fluid between them that provides resistance. The two sections are never fully disengaged from one another, so movement is always smooth and with no play. With there being separate pan and tilt modules, pan drag and tilt drag are accordingly independent, yet work together to allow smooth, uninterrupted motion in any direction. Cartoni performs a laser-assisted, diagonal movement test on every head to ensure that there isn't even the slightest digression from a straight-line movement.

The pan drag control is a large ring in the center of the head that's easy to use even without looking. This and all other controls are designed with ergonomic grips that will feel secure between your fingers. A pan bar is included that can be attached to a rosette adapter on either side of the head, and additional pan bars are available and sold separately.

Note:
Always check with your carrier as carry-on requirements are subject to change.

Sony Network RX Station for Select XDCAM Camcorders

The Network RX Station from Sony is an advanced system for live streaming video and audio directly from select XDCAM camcorders using 4G/LTE and Wi-Fi networks at up to 5 Mb/s. The station uses QoS (quality of service) technology or MPEG2-TS to maintain video and audio integrity during transmission. It can simultaneously control two SDI outputs for live stream from two locations at the same time. Multiple systems can be added for greater input and output loads.
The unit includes reference and timecode input connectors which enable synchronized operation with broadcast systems. In addition, it can output in a variety of broadcast formats including 1080i. The system comes with the preinstalled Connection Control Manager software that enables easy connection to camcorders and delivers efficient handling of the live streams.

Note:
Always check with your carrier as carry-on requirements are subject to change.
Connection Control Manager Software
The Connection Control Manager software enables easy connection to camcorders and delivers efficient handling of the live streams. The software is preinstalled on the unit and presents a comprehensive GUI that can be used to view thumbnails from multiple camcorders, control camcorder connections, transmission bit rates, and latency settings, and to monitor output from multiple units.
QoS Technology
Integrated Sony algorithms automatically adjust bandwidths and buffer sizes to match the characteristics of the wireless transmission. Users can be confident of high-quality streaming without concerning themselves with bandwidth settings and other technical issues. The system includes real-time ARQ (automatic repeat request), adaptive rate control (ARC), and forward error correction (FEC).
Remote File Transfer
The device allows remote access to proxy media within a supported camera or adapter. The remote operator can execute a file transfer from the camera or adapter to an FTP server or cloud service of choice.

Sony PXW-Z280 Reviews

My favorite camcorder to date!

To be honest, I have not used every single camera or camcorder that has ever existed; but I have used cameras from every brand and almost every type since the early 2000's and this one is my favorite. It combines such a wide array of features into a single package that make it one of the most versatile cameras available. My favorite features include: fast lens with an excellent zoom range form factor that balances well, not to heavy for me, with lots of assign buttons and everything in easy reach awesome accessories available from Sony like the wireless audio adapter that can send audio through the MI shoes for additional balanced audio inputs. great controls for focus, zoom and iris excellent image stabilization for doing hand held work. I personally find the menus easy to use, but maybe I'm weird. But I like that I can use Direct Menus with this camera as well as customizing the User Menu to suit my needs Also, when you press the menu button it returns you to the menu item that you were previously using which I think is great. And many, many other features that work extremely well . . . Excellent battery life, turns on super fast, doesn't require a lot of fiddling with once you have it set up how you like it, and on and on. Available recording formats on this camera are great . . . And with firmware 5 you can shoot 120fps in HD which may not currently be listed in the specs. I personally have started to use it for all kinds of videography work like corporate videos, commercial videos, stock footage production and I am planning on using it for my own narrative productions as well. Two caveats, though. One is that you must know what you are doing and take some time to get to know the camera. If you do not do this than you may end up with disappointing results; as some other people have discovered. However, if you take some time to learn this camera and use it properly than the results should be fantastic. The second caveat is nothing to do with this camera but just the truth which is this: it is impossible for any camera to be everything for everyone. This is as true for this camera as it is for any camera. You need to do a lot of research to make sure that a camera like this is what you need. If it is, and you take the time to get to know it, set it up and use it properly, than you may just love it like I do. P.S. I don't love it cause its perfect but because its great! Best of luck!

Best low-light performance I have had in a camcorder!

I used to spend a lot of time in post trying to remove noise from a 2-hr video shoot in venues where video lighting is not even an after thought. Conference rooms, hotel ballrooms, industrial sites and stage productions are not designed to make video production easy, so fix it in post has been a way of life. But, enter the Z280 and life has never been so easy. This may not be the best low-light performer, but when a camcorder advantages are needed this is simply a jewel. From wide angle to full 17x zoom, the image barely darkens - maybe a half stop. I rarely use any gain, but when I do the images have an almost negligible amount of noise - certainly much easier to clean up than in my past. And, night shots are marvelous! My favorite feature is Sony's continuously variable ND filter! No more sacrificing DOF or other aspects of desired image quality to get the perfect exposure. Just dial in the ND level until the Zebras begin to show and you are perfectly exposed. Just about fool proof. I have found two down-sides: one, this is not a open the box and shoot that day. There are no preset scene paint settings, but you can create your own and save them to use later. This is certainly a professional camera with just about everything adjustable from operating controls to image quality. And it can take some time to decide how you want to configure it so it is easy to use for each type of job. The second bummer is that slow-motion is only 60 FPS and just does not get those creamy-smooth slo-mo shots that are popular today. I was reluctant to move to the Z280 because I read a number of bad reviews about picture quality. Then watched videos (both free and paid) on how to get the most from the Z280 and I have never experienced the image problems that stand out in some reviews. I carefully followed the specified steps to set up the camera for back-focus adjustment and it is crystal clear! I took several weeks to familiarize myself with the multitude of customization that make it fit into any shooting style and image demands and it's well worth it. This camera saves me time in the editing studio and broadens the range of jobs I can shoot and get paid for. Less editing time means more paid camera time! It's a winner for me.

This camera fills many boxes. I shoot a lot of sports. A bit overkill for my use. Great picture with many options. When Sony updates with firmware with Ver4 allowing live streaming to Facebook, YouTube, that'll make this camera better for my type of work. Great low light, fairly clean image. Not my go to camera for Slog3, other work flows more than acceptable. I don't have lens issues as others, but it's new. SxS cards are over priced, but is the best way to insure 4K recordings. Nice to be able to set a custom button to record.

The slowest minimum speed with the handle zoom or external LANC controller is far too fast for most uses. Sony says they will most likely never address is issue.

One of the best cameras of all-time

I've owned my Z280 since September 2018 and I absolutely love it. It is by far one of the best cameras I have ever used, especially when you consider the price. Even though I also own an PXW-FS7 and a PMW-F55 ($30,000) I find myself using the Z280 as my primary camera, mostly because of the speed and convenience of having an excellent 17x f/1.9 lens. In my opinion, the complaints about barrel distortion and other issues mentioned in some of the reviews here at B&H are blown totally out of proportion. The Z280 is not an entry-level camera and it is not a consumer camera. It must be setup and operated properly if you expect to get broadcast-quality results. In fact, I feel so strongly about the Z280 that I've produced a 20-minute Youtube video that shows how great the camera is and how you can get maximimum performance from it. I can't post a link here on B&H, but if you Google U_JSeBvpkKo it will come up with the link on Youtube. You will love this camera!!

I hope you like your videos grainy.

Used this camera in a video class at my university. Every video we shot with it was noticeably grainy. This was without any gain or ISO. The camera also has a feature where you slide the focus ring back or forward to swap from manual to auto-focus. This is incredibly easy to do by accident. The dynamic range of the camera is pitiful as well. For the price, this camera isn't worth it. Buy a DLSR with decent lenses instead.

I own a PXW-150. I like the camera a lot but would like a second camera and this Z-280 at 60FPS is very appealing. The only thing I don't like about the 150 is that there isn't an independent button or even one you can program, to mark a shot on the fly—that tells the user to save the shot and delete the rest later. Yes, you can go into the thumbnail menu and mark shots after the fact and delete shots you don't want, but that doesn't do the user any good when they are in a fast-paced sporting or news environment. It's not easy to remember what shots you want to save, so I want to mark a shot as I am taking it and seeing it in the viewfinder. As it is, I have to flip one the LED screen go into the thumbnails and watch all the shots over and select the clips I want to save or delete—that is a lot of time wasted. I was able to mark shots on the fly with the Panasonic HPX-370 shoulder mount camera and it was one of the best features of the camera. Does anyone know if this is an option with the new Sony Z280?If this is not an option, SONY NEEDS to make it happen with an update.
Asked by: Tom
Hi Tom, Yes, the PXW-Z280 can record 2 kinds of Shot Marks. These marks can be programed to an assignable button on the camera body. The description and instructions are on page 39 of the user manual: https://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/402668.pdf Regards, Erin Sony Social Support

This camera has many settings to choose from. The only problem is the end result. I found the quality of video to be very poor. I sent this camera back. There are cameras out there that do a better job. Do not buy this camera.
