Que Audio Q DSLR overview

  • 1Description

The Q DSLR-Video Microphone Kit from Que Audio was designed specifically for use with HD camcorders and DSLR cameras anywhere a high quality, compact, and lightweight on-board shotgun microphone is needed. Although the microphone is extremely small and unobtrusive, the rejection properties are comparable to standard wide body shotgun microphones. The microphone is self-powered using two (2) AG4 1.5V batteries (included) but can also be phantom powered (balanced/low impedance) using the optional QAD3 XLR adapter (batteries remain in mic for parallel operation).

    Que Audio Q DSLR reviews

    Q DSLR-Video Microphone Kit is rated 2.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid this mic Poor build quality. Cheap plastic parts. After testing this mic we decided that there was little benefit and the sound from the on-board Zoom H4n mics was better. We noticed very little difference in audio quality between this mic and the on-board DSLR mic. The shock mount broke within 15 minutes of careful use. Flimsy plastic construction. This system utilizes proprietary connectors which feel fragile and could have easily been 1/8 stereo mini. We will be returning ours.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Impressed It wasn't worth the money. You're far better off paying the extra $50 or so for the zoom H4n. DSLR cameras capture amazing video but the audio system and recording devices are far behind. Record separately and then combine in post

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly Designed and Time-Wasting What an awful product. This microphone kit has so many issues that I'm honestly quite surprised that it was recommended to me by a B&H audio professional. What follows is a series of complaints against the product that build up as they go along - individually, any of the complaints are things that I could get over. Together, however, all of the small issues render the microphone basically unusable in a professional setting. - The cable is TOO LONG. I know, I know, not so bad. But here's the thing - it's ridiculously long. The cable itself is too long as it is, especially since this mic is supposed to go on the cold shoe directly on the camera. The cable is also coiled, so that it can stretch to significantly farther lengths. I even have a box that goes underneath my camera to allow me to adjust gain and volume manually, and the cable is still too long for that. It only serves to get caught on things and get in the way. The cable is also a proprietary one, so I can't just use one of my other cables. Theoretically I could just buy a shorter one...but the company doesn't offer a shorter one. Only a longer one for the boom pole version of the mic. - The entire kit comes with absolutely ZERO DOCUMENTATION - which is entirely necessary, since it comes as a number of small parts that need to be assembled. - The parts need to be TEDIOUSLY ASSEMBLED. We're not just talking a simple click-into-place set-up here - the windscreen jacket has to be pinched and threaded through the crosshair, the microphone then has to be placed into it. The crosshair is then put onto the cold shoe, which is then put onto the camera. There's also a wiggly part you can put in the middle for more movement isolation (which is a nice feature, but another step). Then the cable can be plugged in. It's quite far from plug-and-play. - The parts need to be assembled EVERY TIME. It comes with its own carrying case, which you would think would be a good thing, but the carrying case was designed to hold only the individual pieces. This means that at the end of every shoot, you have to disassemble the device, and then put it back together at the next shoot. - The parts are FLIMSY. The windscreen, which needs to be pinched through the crosshair, is very thin and will most likely rip after repeated use. The crosshair itself is made of four rubber bands, 2 on each side criss-crossing each other. The rubber bands are tiny and will likely fly off or snap after repeated use, and there are no extras included. This means that every time I assemble the device (which, again, is every single time i want to use it), I'm worried about breaking it in more than one way. I'm not even rough with the device, I'm not talking about its durability here, just its general set-up and use. - It runs on TINY WATCH BATTERIES. I guess this is nice if you don't have a box that can provide phantom power...but I do. Even if you provide it with power in that way, you cannot run the microphone without the watch batteries. This means you have to remember to turn off yet another device at the end of your shoot, or risk draining the batteries over time. The fear of the dead batteries would lead me to carry yet another set of batteries in my case...had I not returned the product. I would not recommend this product to anyone. The audio was mediocre. Even if it was superb, it probably wouldn't be worth the hassle.
