Macro Lens Buying Guide
An Intro to Macro Photography
by Mathew Malwitz · Posted 12/17/2025
It is probably safe to say that many of us photographers have, either with our cameras or smartphones, tried to capture a close-up image of an insect, flower, toy, or other object. We have an idea of what we want this photograph to look like as we prepare to capture the image. We've seen and admired beautiful close-up images before but, when we nose the camera lens up to the object, we see nothing but a blur—the lens can't focus close enough to

Moving from Stills to Video: Audio, Audio, Audio
Moving from Stills to Video: Audio, Audio, Audio
by Shawn C. Steiner · Posted 10/20/2025
Audio is extremely important. Photographers haven’t really had to worry about this, but it is something that can make or break your videos. Watch some of your favorite movies and pay close attention to the sound—you will probably pick up some audio cues or effects that amplify the scene or action. If recorded poorly, audio can make something completely unwatchable. Have you ever opened a video online to crackling and noise and decided that it just wasn’t worth enduring? Clarity in audio is one of the most important things for keeping your

Best Gifts for Nature Photographers
Best Gifts for Nature Photographers
by Mathew Malwitz · Posted 09/15/2025
Landscapes and wildlife are among the most challenging subject matter to capture well with a camera. Wildlife is unpredictable and despite your best efforts, will not respond to posing instructions. Landscapes are stationary but at the mercy of available light and weather conditions. All that being said, it is the unpredictable nature of landscape and wildlife photography that has earned these genres a very large, very dedicated, and very passionate following. The dedication of these photographers can make finding the right gift all the more

How to Choose the Best Telescope
How to Choose the Best Telescope
by Christopher Witt · Posted 11/19/2024
Humans’ fascination with the stars is as old as our ability to think and ask questions. For millennia we, as a species, were limited to observing the heavens with just our eyes. Of course, back then we were able to see more because light pollution didn’t exist, but making detailed observations was impossible. The invention of the microscope led to the development of the telescope, which allowed people to finally start exploring the larger universe. As technological advances were made and telescopes got bigger and better, their reach and the

Mother’s Day Gift Roundup
Mother’s Day Gift Roundup
by John Harris · Posted 04/18/2024
I did a quick survey of the women in my life. As it turns out, most of them are somebody’s mother, and one of them is even my mother. I asked what gift they would like for Mother’s Day—items that B&H sells, anyway. Two of them mentioned items they didn’t realize B&H sold, like

Lighting Options for Smartphone Photography
by Shawn C. Steiner · Posted 09/13/2022
Smartphone photography is getting better and better each year. It’s now possible to create usable images in near pitch black and capture stunning photos of the night sky. I’m here to tell you that you no longer have to rely on available light to get a great smartphone shot, there are plenty of new lighting tools available, developed exclusively for smartphones. How to Improve Your Smartphone Photos and Videos
by Mos Khan · Posted 11/02/2021
As each year goes by, smartphone cameras keep getting better, and this also means more and more people have access right at their fingertips to a powerful camera. Social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook wouldn’t be as big as they are without the proliferation of smartphone photography. Still, even with the impressive improvements that have put these mobile cameras in competition with traditional camera systems, there are times that they show their limitations. This is why many companies have been developing mobile photo

Camera Supports for Unique-Angle Camera Positioning
by Allan Weitz · Posted 12/04/2020
Before heading out on assignment, I make a mental checklist of the gear I will be needing, and camera supports are always on that list. Depending on where and what I plan to photograph, I might take a mid- or full-size tripod and be done with it. If I anticipate taking low-angle photographs, I will also pack along a tabletop-size tripod and, for ground-level shooting, one of my Platypods. Truth is, if I have the space, I take all three options, because if I leave any of these options behind, I know I will need it when I get where I’m going.

The Best Tough Cameras
by John Harris · Posted 10/30/2020
Waterproof, durable, and versatile are three of the best descriptors for the point-and-shoot cameras that are commonly known as “tough” cameras. In a camera market that has seen smartphones become our de facto compact cameras, tough cameras have filled an important niche, satisfying the needs of a range of photographers who want a stand-alone camera that can take high-quality images and be safely used underwater, while hiking or skiing or poolside. They are a great vacation camera or an everyday “don’t worry about it” camera and very useful if
